How many of you have used your AR for self defense?

This is why I laugh at guys who buy $350 lights for their AR's and skip past all the quad rail uppers in the marketplace. Lots of money for not much practical funcitonality.sigpic

Needless to say, but a .223 would enter, hit a vital organ, and exit pulling a good portion of that vital organ out with it. Serious overkill, and I'd hate to answer to LE about something like that, even if it was legitimate self defense. It would bring AR's to the forefront of controversy again, which none of us need.Comment

This one time at the range some paper cut me, so I shot the hell out of it. I figured after that lesson it'd never try to cut me again. Sure enough just moments later another sheet tried to cut me. Not only is paper violently aggressive, it's also ignorant and can't learn from example after seeing what's happened to other paper.
Another time I was just standing at the bench minding my own business after taking my rifle out of it's case, and this big piece of cardboard that I helped lean up against the bench just hits me in the leg. I look at it and ask wtf it's problem is, and it just sits there silently as if the wind blew it over. I don't care if it can't get around on it's own or not, I put that SOB up on the target stand and shot the hell out of it.
I don't fear you paper pulp products, don't F*** with me.Comment

I can only speak for self, but you have to consider that the weapon itself far exceeds the realm of practicality for the average civilian. In my opinion, buy what you can afford, and trust me, if I could afford furnish my M4 with an ATN NVM14-4, I definitely would, but I cannot. If the next man can, I will secretly covet his weapon from afar.
In short, there are AR's, optics and accessories out there to suit every budget, and the only limitation is your wallet, in addition to your perception of what's practical for you, which is the absolute beauty of the AR.
Since there are so many OLL's and uppers available, in my opinion, the novelty associated with owning an AR has slightly diminished, which is why I chose to simply source a Colt M4 lower, a Colt M4 upper, and Aimpoint optics. No rails, and no accessories. Just pure, unadulterated simplcity.
To specifically answer your question, no, but we don't live within a perfect society that's driven by practicality.Last edited by Press Check; 07-21-2011, 11:17 PM.Comment

I see nothing impractical whatsoever about using an AR in home defense.
In fact if you live with others, I think an AR makes much more sense than most service caliber handguns; contrary to popular misconception, 5.56 and 5.45 are much more easily stopped by interior walls than 9mm, .40, and .45 (and the like).
Honestly it sounds like you're trying to get the rest of us to justify you owning an AK and not owning an AR.
When it comes down to it, AK's and AR's are both proven to be very capable man-stoppers. AR's are much more accurate and pleasant to shoot; AK's are cheaper, the ammo is cheaper, and they're marginally more rugged.
One last thing: you seem to think people only spend a lot of money on AR parts and accessories--you need to look around man, people spend TONS of money on AK accessories (and conversions).Gun Control: The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her panty hose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound. -- L. The question itself bugs me. You sound like just an AK guy looking for a way to bash ARs and AR owners without coming right out and doing so. You could ask how many of you have ever used a gun, any gun, to defend yourself. You will get the exact same answer. So your point is seriously flawed, and is not all that different that the antigun question of "why do you need a gun at all". The answer(s) to their question and yours is exactly the same. They range from none of your business, to because the second amendment says I can, to better to have it and not need than need it and not have it, and on and on.
I hope never to have to use any of my guns to defend mylife or the lives of my loved ones. But if it ever comes down to it I am glad I own several guns upon which I feel comfortable trusting my life to. And I am glad I invested the time, energy and money into learning how to use the right. If it turns out I never need it...so much the better...but I had one heck of a fun time learning how.Last edited by tacticalcity; 07-21-2011, 11:36 PM.Comment

What kind of car do you drive? When you bought it, did you spring for any of the extras? Did you insist on there being A/C? Good speakers? Navi-system? Hell, all you need that car to do is get you from point A to B, right? You don't even really need a stereo, or a spare tire (there are all those call boxes on the highway for you to call for a tow). Why'd you waste your money on all those extras?
p.s. honestly I think you're trolling. good job.NRA member
