    Remington 700 18"

Was looking at an 18" barrel on a remington 700 in .308. The barrel was enormous! (very thick). why is that? And is 18" less accurate than for example a 20"?

It wouldn't necessarily be less accurate but you'd have a little less muzzle velocity with the 18", nothing really noticable though. How many yards to you wanna shoot it at?

For .308WIN, 18" is starting to become popular, though if you want to get the most out of that cartridge it's wise to go to 20-22".

Was this a custom built rifle?

I don't know of any 700's that come with an 18" barrel from the factory.

            18" is stiffer.

Less velocity, but this is not that great of an issue if you're not handloading.

Great handling and better balance for sure.

18-22" for 308 is sufficient, anything longer just gives you a bit more velocity. Either of those lengths will take you to 1000 with heavier ammo.

ive been only reaching out to 100 yards with my AR15 and want some to go much much farther. My goal is 1,000 yards. Now i know the AR COULD go to 1,000 even though mine is 16", i want to have much more velocity at that distance. I also heard the thicker barrel means it wont heat up as fast. And no, it was not custom that i know of. Held it at Sportsman Supply on Camden Avenue.

This is nothing new to GPS sniper school. They've been teaching their students to shoot 18" Remingtons for many years:

The 18" bull barrel would be the SPS Tactical if I'm not mistaken? Semi common I'd think.

It must be custom. Remington makes no production 18" barrel.

Or you are underestimating and it's the 20" Tactical model.

Either way, it's a good barrel length and it will outshoot you probably if you are a novice shooter.

If you want to get to 1K I would get the SPS-V with the heavy 26" barrel. The 18 can make it but the 26 will give you the extra velocity to make it a little easier.

If its done correctly and the crown is good, Ive been told it could improve accuracy over a factory crowned barrel. Velocity loss does however, increase problems with stabilization and increase wind affect.

                            Negative.

The SPS Tactical has a 20" barrel.

As I said, there aren't any OEM Remington 700's with 18" barrels.
