    PTR-91 OR M1A?

I am sure this has been beat to death, so let the flamers begin. I searched the web for hours and was left with several opinions, none of which I trust because none of those with the opinions left me amazed with their experience.
First off, I owned an HK91, the real oracle, in the 80's which I bought brand new from Turners for $399. About 1983 I think. Yeah, I am that old. It was a flawless rifle and never gave me any trouble. Never a jam, never a failure to eject, nothing. It ran like a Rolex and performed like a BMW. Goobled up every kind of ammo and asked for more. Anyway, when Bush Sr. signed into federal law the ban on such items of excellence, and made it mandatory to register with the feds ownership of such a thing, I bit the bullet and sold my HK91 for almost 15 times the price I paid for it. But, I digress.
Now I see the PTR91 at Turners for less than 1200 before tax and gov fees. The HK memories are strong and I am almost ready buy the thing. But the youngster behind the counter at Turners began telling me how unreliable the HK 91's were. Heh. What a moron, he picked the wrong customer to BS with. So I stopped listening and walked away. But, I am curious. Despite the bad sales pitch, and I won't hold that against PTR, I like the looks and familiarity of the PTR 91, BUT I don't want bad clone. I can swing the extra bills for a M1A, but its just a clone too if you go back far enough. And frankly, since Springfield builds the XD (or whatever those Glock patented pistols are called), in Croatia, they kind of destroyed my confidence in them as an All American company. (I don't mind buying foreign, such as HK, Sig, or Glock. But why does an american company have pistols built in eastern Europe)? Nevermind.
What's the better rifle? PTR 91 or M1A? I don't care about weight or MOA accuracy, I just want a reliable 308 semi auto rifle.

Our Military and Coast Guard uses the M1A, if its good enough for them, its good enough for me. I love the M1A scout rifle, and also I am a fanboy of the Garand and since the M1A is like the grandson of the garand... I'm all for it! (never shot an HK91 or any clone) just basing this on my love of the M1A and its widespread use in our own military (meaning if springfield does have some weapons built out of country, they must still be quality)

well, if you already had the real deal and didnt mind the no-bolt hold open, then you will love the ptr91, methinks. my ptr91 gi is a great rifle, and has had no reliability issues whatsoever. i do like the GI model more than the regular ptr91, due to the flash hider being threaded. iirc, the high-dollar one use a press-fit flash hider, and that precludes me from swapping it out for a muzzle brake for a featureless build. plus i like the OD green furniture, it just looks cool. when i got the rifle from atlantic firearms, they sent the standard mag catch parts in a bag with the rifle, so i didnt have to hunt them down after i got my muzzle brake and kydex grip-wrap installed.
hopefully you still have some of those dirt-cheap magazines kicking around in the garage, they are priceless for a featureless build. good luck with the hunt!

Both platforms are proven designs, but being the M1A is based off an American M14, and the PTR91 is based off a German design, I have a feeling your going to get more votes for the M1A on this forum, after all who doesn't love the son of a Garand.

I chose the SAR8 over the M1A years ago, but just becasue I thought it looked cool, and that was before I was into wood rifles, now it's a toss up, I could go either way.

Which one do you really like? do you have any preban Hi Cap mags for either? it's much easier to go featureless ( and still look good) on a M1A than a HK style rifle to use preban Hi Caps.

Both will be good guns, go with the one that just says, oh yes to you.

I just picked up a Poly M14S it should go just fine with my SAR8

          I have an M1A Scout and PTR91.
Back it the day I too shot a "real" HK91 and it left it's mark on me...in a good way.
I can say that the new PTR HK clone will satisfy your need for a HK91.
Parts interchange and ex-German army GI parts are all over the place. Some in "as new" condition.
Caveat; you'll extra stuff to make the PTR Cali legal. Nothing extra needed for the M1A.

I own neither, but in doing my research, the M1A is a great rifle, but I think you'd be happier with the PTR91, and it'll definitely bring back fond memories for you.

Dang, I hate having regrets, but your story reminds me that I sold my beloved HK USP9.... When I first bought the HK USP9 it was only about $499. Nowadays, I don't think you can find it anywhere for less than $800

you should look at the FAL, as an option too. brass out of the ptr 91 isnt too good if you plan on reloading...

                    I have an early M1A (50XX) - all I can say is I love it. Never a hick-up. Ever.

If I can only have 1 rifle, that rifle, for me, would be my M1A.

                    Just my $0.02.
Next to me in the blackness lay my oiled blue steel beauty. The greatest Christmas gift I had ever received, or would ever receive. Gradually, I drifted off to sleep, pringing ducks on the wing and getting off spectacular hip shots.

Thanks to everyone for the quick replies! By my score, thats 3 for the PTR and 3 for the M1A. I am still undecided but I am leaning towards the M1A. If HK offered the HK91 still, or they were availablle in good condition for way way less than 5 grand, that would definitely be my choice. But California laws ruined that anyway.
I kinda want an original, and the M1A is closer to that mark. That issue throws out the FN FAL clones. Although I know the FN FAL originals were an awesome tool. And I am sure the latest clones or parts guns are good-to-go, I only like the PTR91 because I had an HK and I LOVED it.
As far as reloads are concened, I had a buffer on my HK, and I reloaded 308 brass from it without any problems. The bolt hold open feature is important, but the reliabilty and accuracy of the HK shadowed that issue. All these guns shoot way more accurate than I do, and I don't compete, so being a tac driver is cool but not an issue. I have some hi cap HK mags left over and just collecting dust in the safe for the PTR.. so thats an issue too. And I own them straight up and legal. But the PTR is still a copy.. Hmmm
I think the Turners sale ends tomorrow, So I am going to sleep on it and review the responses I get in the morning. Make a decision and then buy a new rifle. Whoo Hooo. Thanks again everyone, maybe I'll see you in the desert busting caps.

my vote for the PTR. will run lower grade ammo and mags are cheap. M1As can be kinda picky and mags are too pricey

M1A has the best iron sights of any semiauto rifle.

If your eyes are good enough, you can get to 600 yards.

                          You can detach mags.

It's a piston driven gun so its very reliable.

                          The ergonomics are great.

The trigger kicks the PTR91's *** any day. Two-stage match grade on the Loaded models.

The NM sights are the best for long range shooting.

You see M1As (less than AR15s, but they're there), you don't see any PTR91s. The M1A can shoot less than 2MOA with cheap surp, won't ding the brass and eat it like a mother, and points well. What more do you want?

                            M1a -- no neuter
PT - bullet button - so can NEVER feel like a "real" H&K.
