Which Noveske Upper is the best for me? Recon vs Recce

    Hello again Calguns.net members,

I am putting together a Noveske lower and am getting various recommendations from different dealers.

I am a rifle novice and this will be my first! I figured Noveske was one of the best brands if not the best, and looked around, it appears to be extremely popular and is not readily available, but extremely expensive, maybe no one is selling them anymore, because they are so expensive....
When I started on this project, people advised me more positively that it was a rifle of very high quality and not what I am now being told that is not quickly sold (my experience so far, shows me that it is extremely sought after and people pay, including myself, a premium for Noveske parts).

When I finally decided on the Noveske Recce 16" with switchblock and VIS, I found a link from someone on these forums that suppresors are not legal in the state of California for civilians, which I am, nor are any items allowing you to attach sound suppressors or to allow their use, hence in more direct terms, no switchblocks are allowed for civilians or those that are not police offiicers, or swat team members, security, or special license from California (which is highly unlikely that I will be able to obtain, no matter what my reason/s or desires).

I wanted to have the switchblock for resale value, as I also noticed they were quite popular! I know that I would have a much greater market place to sell to, even to active police officers if I so desired with the switchblock, rather than without it since they would all want one attached naturally.

I didn't find any issue with dealers out of state wanting to sell me a recce with a switchblock, and they had no knowledge of the legal issues and would obvoiusly like to sell one to me!

I assume that California has no rules against VIS rails!!!????

So, now I am left with a final decision: which Noveske upper should I get?
Looks like the trend is towards the chrome, so Light Recce or go with steel and get the 16" recon?

Recce uppers are sold out everywhere, which sort of makes me desire it mroe, crazy idea of wanting something you cannot have....

And, the question I really have now, more than ever, is if I can own and use at a range, a rifle with switchblock?

Recon vs Recce with our without switchblock
and I am already pretty much decided on having VIS

Skip the switchblock and simplify your rifle and its functioning. Don't get it just because it's cool and popular and might have higher resell value (it doesn't really).

Get the recon if you want higher accuracy.

Get the reece if you want more barrel life for general shooting and plinking.

I have never heard anything about a switchblock being illegal in Ca, but there is really no need for one since you can't get a suppressor. I have two Noveskes and they are worth the price if you ask me. They are hard to come by because the are usually sold as soon as if not before they arrive at gun stores. I have an Infidel SS upper that is actually more accurate than my 14.5 inch upper. Happy hunting for a new upper.

Don't waste your money on Noveske! No matter how "great" they (or others) may bill them to be, you will not ever find yourself in any situation in which you will "use" what Noveske sells.

Trust me - please! No more Noveske-aid! Drink something else, cause it all tastes the same and everyone else's drink is the same!

Noveske makes fantastic rifles but their are other lower cost options from Daniel Defense, Bravo Company, LMT that will serve you as well.
My opinions are my own and do not represent the position of other companies I may be involved with.

GO BCM or Daniel Defense. Save yourself some money while still getting awesome quality and performance.

I was about to ramble, because I got to admit, this has consumed me for more than a few days now!
Yeah, Noveske rifles are very expensive, but are considered to be one of the best. I have noticed some prices fluctuate and go higher, when demand becomes overwhelming for aesthetic reasons as well, like Billet and people like the trigger guard to be apart of the stripped lower. Noveske is coming out with theirs soon, maybe next few days or August (2nd gen) is what I am hearing. I am having looney tunes type urges to smack myself in the face and make funny noises when I am about to go through with these purchases, not really, just my sense of humor on over drive, but, I really cannot wait till I get my gun and take it to the range. Before it was a question of Recce or Recon, now it is switchblock or no switchblock. Legal reasons are one, but really, will California ever allow a civilian to have a silencer? Even with extreme arm twisting? Then again what is an extra $50 and few oz?
I saw a quote somewhere about California law, and maybe I just skimmed it, but I will post it here, regarding silencers, interpretation of it may lead an officer to confiscate a rifle! Technically, a switchblock would be a device that would allow a silencer, because it regulates gasses and I am a little confused if the Noveske uppers could accept silencers without modification or adapters....

Switchblocks are perfectly legal. However, there's no point in getting one if you're not going to be using a suppressor.

                        ^^ THIS.

I have a Noveske N4. It shoots just fine with its chrome-lined barrel.

The Recce 16" variant came out just after - I would have liked the extra 1.5" of barrel length for a tad more velocity and would really love an 18" version too.

I generally do not buy non-chrome-lined barrels. I would chrome-line my intestines if I could.

A switchblock is something that most people do not need, esp in CA - and it will also not appreciably change the resale value of a used gun.

I have 3 Noveske 18" barrels, including 1 that survived a kaboom. Very durable and accurate barrels (I'm only talking about their SS barrels). Looking over their components, I would't pay extra for a complete Noveske rifle when I could pick out the components that I really want. Just an idea...

And why would you want to resell any AR when you can just buy more and add to the family.....

Yeah, I collect, I don't really sell anything! Very good point :P

I figure the 16" is just about right in length. I don't believe getting a sound suppressor is impossible (legally!).

Idk, maybe I shouldn't waste my time with a switchblock, for the cost a good suppressor I can buy another Upper!
