    Inside my AR-15 Upper

So yesterday I finally noticed something strange as I was cleaning my AR-15. Usually I just do the usual patch cloth run through barrel, clean BCG etc, and never really noticed the inside of my upper. When I took out the BCG, I noticed that there were large blotches of gray and signs of a dried out liquid it seems. Is the paint coming off inside of my upper? Or is it just carbon? Or is it just burnt out lube? What should I do? More cleaning? or more lube?

    Thanks

There was something similar to this a little while ago in another thread. It wasn't anything to be worried about. I'm sure somebody will come along shortly and guide you to it.

Some manufacturers coat the inside with a dry lube that wears away over time that causes the appearance of discoloration, that may be what you are experiencing.

Here is a picture of what I'm talking about. It is the gray that I am talking about. My latest hypothesis is that it is possibly baked on Miltec lube that I used. Can anyone confirm? What do you guys think?

              Thanks

New AR? Did you clean it before you shot it?
Militec conditioner won't look like that when ran thru an AR.
                Does it wipe off?
I suggest you rinse and repeat.

shot 1000 rounds through my brand new AR so far in 4 days... there is a lot of scratches, marks, wear spots. I am pretty much not worried about it

Looks like dry film lube to me.

                      Weird.

Looks like the inside was painted or powder coated and it's flaking/shearing off. I've never seen that before. I'm sure it's fine.....doesnt appear to have any structural damage....just a cosmetic thing. Maybe an out-of-spec bolt carrier or possibly an out of spec upper receiver is causing the wear???

I can tell you what it's not:

                      - Dried lube (oil doesnt do this)
                      - Carbon build up (it would be an even spread, not clear, absolute lines)

                      Who made your upper?

That's Teflon/dry lube thats baked onto the upper. My upper has it flaking off too, & looks just like your pic.

Its a BCM upper. Any suggestions for cleaning it off to apply a new coat of Miltec?

I wouldn't waste my time trying to clean it off or replace it as it has no bearing on the functioning of the firearm at all.
