    It depends.

If I had to bug-out, I'd take the Saiga in .223 because the rifle and ammo weigh much less than the .308.

If I had to stay put, I'd take the Saiga in .308 because the rifle and ammo hit a lot harder and further than the .223.

Keep in mind .223 ammo costs much less than .308.

Never say never. Buying guns is like eating potato chips. You can't just have one.

308 and 7.62x39 are two very different rounds. The AK was designed around the 7.62x39. The 223 and 308 option are available from Saiga as well but they are very different.

Ok showing my ignorance sorry about that. Didnt mean to take it there. So its 223 or 7.62x39. Age old debate I know. Both are great, got it. Only question then. Which ammo in general is going to be cheaper for the long haul. I live in the lower Sierras and hope to stay put. When I buy my ammo I will make one maybe two bulk purchases. Then just shoot the hell out of it like I do with my other guns. Thanks

no worries. it depends in america the .223 is very common, but the ak ammo can be bought really cheap in spam cans and what not, but its corrosive,

.223 mags are hard to come by.

but with the X39 you can convert it to a real ak and use surplus mags for cheap and have a lot of mags.

you can still get cheap ammo that is not corrosive for the x39 but not as cheap as the corrosive type.

So the corrosive stuff mean I have to clean my rifle after every use correct? Or is there more to it than that. Im bad at cleaning. My .22's its every 3 or 4 times. My shotty I have never cleaned it! I know I know horrible. Im going to clean my shotty now. Oh and lots of cheap mags is a good thing!

I'd say go with the traditional 7.62x39, like every one says, it's what it was meant to shoot.. as for the corrosive part, yes, it's because the bullet releases a sort of chemical that will damage your gun if not cleaned properly over the long run!

                      Hope that helps!

SOLD!! 7.63x39 it is. Im getting one this week!! Im getting a base bone stock Saiga. I like the non pistol grip look and will keep it that way. But Im not against modding the rest of it. Im going to start looking at the gas block system first. Thanks everyone for the input.

Go with the traditional AK round. (7.62x39mm)

Here is a Calguns post on how to clean after using corrosive ammo.
