Yea now im looking at the Savage rifle in .223 He may like the recoil of that better than a 308 and the price is better for the .223 ammo. He doesn't need an amazing scope. Hes not hunting. Were are just gonna create our own fun target games and what not.

The Axis XP is the version that comes with a scope. If it's just AXIS, then it doesn't come with one but ready to accept whatever you throw on, FYI.

A .22 rifle is where most people learn. You can jump right into something bigger, but you will be at a disadvantage when it comes to learning proper marksmanship. You can pickup a .22 rifle (new) from $150 and up. Even my Savage .17 HM2 was a good deal at $600 with glass and bi-pod.

If you're going to go for an out of box shooter, then a Howa package (Made in Japan) or a Savage is the way to go. If you want something a little more custom, you could have a smith build you a Remington 700 to your specs.

+1 on the 22. That way, you can each get one, put a decent 3-9 scope, extra magazines and ammo and still stay within your budget. If you're going to play games, you'll like the inexpensive rimfire and you can both shoot at the same time.

BTW, it's fun to customize the 10/22's with all the stuff available out there.
