ER Shaw barrels can do rebarreling and bluing if you send the rifle to them. Mauser is about the easiest rifle there is to rebarrel, so any decent gunsmith should be able to do it. -
To do properly, one needs, or should have, a lathe. Most barrels that you can get are prethreaded and "short chambered". Meaning that the threads have been cut, and most of the chamber is done. What is left is the final reaming for the finished chamber(usually about .050").
Due to manufacturing tolerances and each countries various ideas as to how to make a Mauser, the distance from the front of the ring to the "C" collar inside the receiver may vary. That is the part on the barrel from the end of the chamber to the shoulder. So, that part on the barrel needs to be adjusted to fit the action. The Mauser was designed to have the chamber end of the barrel butt up against the C collar inside the receiver. One may or may not have the barrel shoulder butt up against the front of the receiver ring. That often is up to personal preference.
That is where the lathe comes in. Adjusting that part. At the same times sometimes the front of the receiver ring needs to be trued. Not often. I've only had to do it on 2 or 3 actions.
One can often order barrels prethread and "Long chambered". Meaning the chamber is cut a bit long, and one then turns down the rear of the barrel(shoulder and chamber end to fit the reciever) to adjust the headspace.
I've heard of people doing that with just files. But having a lathe is easier. That procedure is for people who don't have chambering reamers and don't want to spent the money to rent one.
So, yes it is within the relm of a doityourselfer. It really isn't hard to do.
You can get Adams and Bennett barrels from Midway USA for about $90 each. Short chambered and prethreaded. They are decent barrels for the price, and often better than a factory made barrel.
Midway currently has their Bold triggers for Mausers on sale this month. Those without the saide safety will require a low scope saftey installed on the military bolt shroud. If you get one with a side safety, you can then install a streamlined bolt shroud which looks much better.Comment
