    CMMG .22 conversion issues

I just picked up a CMMG .22 conversion kit. It's the parkerized model. I lubed the thing really well and dropped it into my upper and loaded up. I started to shoot and within 2rds I got a FTF. I cleared it and tossed that round as it got bent. Fired, FTF again, the round got stripped from the mag and it went vertical in the receiver. I had to strip the upper to clear it. Basically this is what happened the entire time.

Also it seems that after the last round, if I can get that far, the bolt rests on the mag follower.

Any body have this experience and found ways to fix it?

Have you tried different types of ammo?

I was using CCI AR Tactical .22LR. To answer the question though, no. Ideally though I would love to get this working with all .22 I don't like the idea of having ammo that I can't use.

I had a CMMG dedicated upper with the parkerized bolt that did the exact same thing. My guess is changing ammo won't help, didn't for me. After being told to cycle it enough to wear away the parkerization and try to ream out the chamber I was thouroughly upset. You could do that but instead I sent it back to CMMG and upgraded to a stainless steel bolt and haven't had a problem since.

Also check your lower especially the hammer springs. Make sure everything is in tight and proper.

And the magazine follower is suppose to act as the bolt catch unless you upgrade to the bolt hold open setup which is real nice.

Hmm...I submitted a request to CMMG if they let me I will upgrade to the stainless. I can't imagine that they would charge more for it but we will see. I have cycled it about 50 - 100 times. Think that's enough?

Oh the mag is pretty tight in the mag well. Did you have the same issue? Did you sand down the mag? Do you have different mags?

My buddy has the stainless cmmg kit with their supplied mag and his is a tight fit as well. I have their dedicated upper and bought some black dog mags and they are much smoother in the magwell. Cheap too at 44mag.com.

This post should help you. I was having the same problem. After i did this my .22 eats any brand ammo, runs prefect.

Were you having the black dog mag issues? The OP in this thread is just using the CMMG mag as far as I know. I had not heard of this issue with the black dogs though, mine have been 100% with no mods. Lucky me I guess, at least I know where to look if I start getting the issues.

Yup, I was using Blackdog mags after about 2 rounds FTF. The bullet flip vertical because the mags lips were too open so it allow the bullet to flip upward as the bolt hit it and got stuck. But with my CMMG mags it ran perfect so i knew it had to be the blackdogs. But once i fixed it that thing is a lot of fun to shoot.

I have the stainless model with zero issues. I also sanded down the magazine to allow it to drop free of the mag well.

My CMMG worked fine for about a brick before I started getting the same issues as the OP. I sold it and went back to shooting .223

Just have to live with it for a couple/few hundred rounds while it breaks in. After the initial FTF/FTE, mine ran as smooth as a SS version. Patience.

My first five mags had many FTF and FTE. All due to magazine movement during cycling. From using the mag as a hand grip or as a mono-pod pure crapola. Once the mag was hanging free a untouched it magically transformed into a semi-auto. Have since then switched lowers to one that is snug on the blackdog mag while still dropping free with the bolt back in conjunction with the mag release. This lower has no problems with mag contact.

I was ready to add JB weld to the mags to make them tighter in the loose lower. But won't have to after all.

22 semi-autos are finicky . Many need some loving care to be their best. My cmmg kit got hit with 400grit then 2000 grit sand paper all over. To remove any burrs to protect the upper , prevent short stroking, aid ejection and feeding. Also lube and cycle the action by hand outside the receiver 1000+ times. It's all bang bang bang from there.

this is what the .22 conversion kits do. I got the cmmg one as well which came with blag dog mags. The black dog mags are crap.
Like others said, the first 100-200 rounds it will jam up like crazy, then it gets...better. I can abide the FTF and FTE, but the biggest problem is when it flips that casing straight up between the bolt and charging handle. You have to practically disassemble the thing to get it out of there, and it happens every 2-3 mags in my case. Not much fun.
Are the CMMG mags made of metal? I seriously hate those blag dog magazine. the feed lips broke on one of mine just wile it was loaded in my range bag.
also, to the OP. The bolt is supposed to catch on the follower on the last round.
