    Best value and quality scope?

Do any of you have advise on the best scope to purchase for shooting 400yards to 3,000 yards that is also between $250.00 to $400.00? Or am I dreaming??

Are used scopes worth the risk to purchase?

    Thanks

I'm not sure a $400 scope can get you out to 3k yds. and let you see clearly.

      Dreaming? Yes

The risk of a used scope purchase depends upon the scope, the price for the scope, and the reputation of the seller. Impossible to answer with out a few details.

swfa.com might be a starting point.

OT, but what do you have that can reliably get hits at 3k yds??

OT #2, maybe you want to put this in the optics section.

          3000 yards? 1.7 miles?

          Uh yeah, dreaming.

Here is a list of things you will want in a long range scope:
              1. 30MM (instead of 1") tube so you have lots of adjustment room for windage and elevation
              2. Something that goes up to a high magnification so you can see what you're shooting at
              3. A large objective lens so you can gather enough light at those higher magnifications
              4. Easy to adjust turrets for elevation and windage (since you will be changing them a lot if you are shooting between 400 and 3000 yards.)

That being said, the longest sniper shot in the world was about 2700 yards. Which took place in high elevation with some thin air to shoot through. I can't reccomend a scope for that distance, but good luck to you. As far as reccomended gun and caliber, might I suggest a 16" naval gun.

                All-

                Thanks for the replies.

Sorry about the 3,000 yards, I want to out to 1,000 yards or about 1/2 mile.

                Good info on tube dia.

What do you think distance wise, a .308 is good for using Savage 10FCP-k?

                Thanks Again

SWFA is coveted as the best bang for the buck or value and typically compete with scopes 2x their price. They just had a group buy on a 5-20x50 but that was over twice your budget after the 500 dollars off... for 400 bucks, I think you are asking a bit much. For a lesser scope that seems to be alright, look into the Falcon optics. They are made in china but those are probably around your budget. Couple of my friends use a Falcon Meanace for their 1k yard shots.

                      Pretty much a dream...

I know ill be the minority with this recommendation but i recommend the Ziess Conquest line of scopes.

I honestly think they are far better glass than anything else for the money.

I do a lot of distance shooting and can rate the following scopes as:

Poor: Barska, BSA, Tasko, NCStar, Alpine

Middle oF the pack: Cheaper Bushnell's, Cheaper Leupolds, Burris, Cheaper Nikon's, Sitron

Upper Middle Road: Leupold, Bushnell Elite, high end Burris, Nikon

Top Teir: Swarovski, Zeiss, Night force, USO, Schmidt and Bender

For value vs dollar for long range shooting I would say: the Bushnell Elite, Leupold VX3, and Nikon Monarch. The Nightforces are probbably the best value for the money of the highest end scopes.

I just tried 1k yds. for the first time this weekend. Used my RD Precision Rem 700 topped off with a Bushnell Elite 4200 Tactical 6-24x50mm. Scope was plenty clear and bright for 1k yds. Coupled with a 20 MOA mount, I still had 11 minutes of up elevation left, too. As I have the SWFA SS 5-20x coming in, however, the Bushnell will now be listed for sale here in the classifieds ($500).

Just by the question I see someone needs more education on shooting.

Used leupold scopes are always a good bet. They will fix/replace them if bad to anyone. But I have never seen a bad one yet.

For long range shooting a high quality(and high dollar) scope is a must. Consider a Nightforce or Leupold MK IV. The difference between my Nightforce NXS scopes and any other scope(including the lesser than MK IV Leupolds) that I have seen is the difference between night and day.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.
