Smith Vortex Flash device good or bad?

    hi,
wondering if the smith vortex is good or bad before i have it pinned.
what are you experiances with it?
any other good options beside the standard bird cage?

The Vortex followed by the Phantom apparently have the greatest reduction in flash.

Works much better than the standard flash hider-- you hardly see anything.

I have one on my coyote gun when gets a frequent use after the sun goes down.

It is very good. Reduces flash to almost nothing.

However, It does not have any significant recoil reduction properties: it is a flash hider only. There is a slight but noticeable increase in muzzle flip/rise when compared to an A2 birdcage.

Not sure about the current production models, but I had problems with two of the early Vortex suppressors back in 99 and 01.

I had a Smith Vortex pinned to a 14.5" M4 barrel. I bought the Vortex from Smith and had GG&G install it on the barrel.

After less than 500 rds the tines of the Vortex began to spread apart and show signs of stress fractures. Eventually one of the tines broke off.

I had to send it back to GG&G to have it replaced under Smith's warranty.

The replacement Vortex has more than 1,000 rds through it. Every 100 rds I've measured the tines across the front of the Vortex and have measured an increased diameter of 0.016".

Another draw back is that the open tines tend to snag on clothing and brush.

I prefer the four slot YHM Phantom with the slots timed at 1:30, 4:30, 7:30 and 10:30.

Nothing but good things to say from me. Vortex and Fantom are exual IMO and experience. I prefer that they be aligned so that there is at least some solid portion on the bottom to reduce "dust up" when firing.

The only bad thing I could see is that by cutting and perma-pinning you are stuck with that choice... I went that route with a bushmaster upper and an AK type break like the ones they have for sale normally...bad choice. Now I'm stuck with that middle ground quality break when others that are more superior have come out since...

With the right tools, permanent muzzle devices CAN be removed.

                    Sorry to hi-jack the thread.
Thanks for the tip Randall, I might be calling you soon! I hate that POS on my perfectly heavy weight upper...

Again, plz check FAQ and read the related laws. It is configuration dependent.
