Well, the rifle will be about $650 with tax and dros, stock is $780 shipped so I am looking at $1440. if I use my current IOR as I plan to that is doable with the items I just unloaded and I will have about a G left over for the wife. Then I'll give someone a really great deal on my Savage and be happy.

Yeah, because a McMillan with Badger DBM is soooo much cheaper.

You know nate, since I haven't placed my order with Randy yet, I've been thinking about doing the same thing. SPS varmint in 308 and AICS from Tac pro. I could burn up the stock barrel in a few months and then have Randy rebarrel it in .260 and work his magic. I don't see any downsides to your idea.

So far locally (or shipped one transfer fees are included) Turners has the best price Oh well I get an excuse to talk to an old buddy that works there, maybe he can knock a few bucks off.

One suggestion - both of ya know what you're wanting and what you need so here is what I'd do -

Get the SPS - sell the stock, bottom metal (follower and spring too as a package) and the barrel and lug.

Order a barrel of your brand, and get either a Badger or Holland lug. (remeber that the AICS is cut for a std lug so remember to tell Randy to recut the area) Go ahead and order your stock. When all comes in take it to Randy for his magic.

Why waste your time on a factory barrel etc - you guys have already gone through the learning curve.

I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.

As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.

Very good points, I'm just impatient and want to be shooting the new stock/gun instead of waiting I figure I can be shooting while I am waiting for the barrel and Randy to have time to build it.

Factory barrels don't bother me that much. I've beat plenty of more expensive rifles with the stock tube on my Savage. But as a whole, yes, I agree...life is too short for stock barrels! I just need to decide if I want it in 308 or .260. My Savage will remain as a backup rifle for the time being.

Being much more costly to replace a barrel on a remmy, I'm somewhat inclined to get it in 308 for barrel life. But the ballistics of the 260 (and longer barrel life than 243) are very appealing. I can always use a little advantage in the wind department. The big thing is barrel life. Around 4-5K on the 260 and 7-8k on the 308.

As far as getting the sps first, when I talked to Randy and got prices for everything, it was cheaper to just have him use a new short action he has and have him get all the parts. His price on the AICS 1.5, when used in one of his builds, is $713. The action is only $325. Total cost for my spec'd rifle was only $2038, with Vais brake and duracoated. If I immediately ditch the factory barrel, it'd be better just to have Randy do it from the ground up.

              Decisions...

I gotta call him, still haven't heard back from him in email. The main reason I am looking for an alternate route to an AICS is more time behind the stock. I hate waiting. Id have to wait for it to be built plus wait the 10 days

He already built a rifle like the one I want.

I'm in the same boat as you guys - sorta - its toward the end of the season basically (at least for me now that SCPRC '07 is over) and I have an itch for a new build - I'm thinking of either a heavily fluted M24 Rock barrel in .243 or a carbon-fiber barrel (with ROck internal) in the same caliber in a McM A3 or adj HTG. After lugging Savannah II for the past two years I want a LIGHT rifle. I'm also thinking of having it built on a Mod 7 action (XP 100) if McM can mate up one of those stocks to it. Then I'll have a heavy rifle and a light rifle.

After running the numbers again the price with Randy building it right away would be around $2000. That is pretty much what I have budgeted. The only problem I can see is waiting 90+ days plus another 10 days (if the barrel is in, if not another 8 to 12 weeks). I would rather be shooting now and order a barrel for the SPS. Once it is in then send it to him to take care of business during the winter time when life gets to busy for me to shoot that much.

I figure I would order and get the parts (paying a little more I know) and be shooting while I wait for stuff to come in. Once everything is here then get it built.

After how long it took to get my 6.5 Grendel rifle built, I'll never do it again. I completely agree with you Nate, I want to be shooting NOW! I'd rather work with some stock configurations in place to begin with and upgrade a bit at a time. That way at least I am shooting the rifle as I work towards the final product.

Stock ordered and DROSing gun this after noon. Which rings with a 20moa base and a scope with a 50mm objective. I hear you have to go high instead of medium?

With a 50mm objective you'll have to go with the high rings. I barely clear with the medium on my 44mm objective.

I use a Badger rail and rings with my 4-16X50 Nikon. The rings are Medium.
