    5.56 mm DMR Build

    Hi all.

I completed my carbine build a while back and am now looking to begin another project. I am interested in building a 5.56 mm DMR capable of consistently hitting a man-sized target at a distance of 300-500 meters.

The spiritual inspiration for my build is the USMC SAM-R:

As of now, the project is in the planning stage. i have a partial list of components, as listed below. Advice and suggestions will be most welcome and appreciated. Thanks folks.

    - Stag Arms stripped lower receiver
    - Rock River Arms lower receiver parts kit
    - Stag Arms M16A2 receiver extension
    - Magpul PRS stock (5.56 mm version)
    - Magpul MIAD grip
    - Magpul enhanced trigger guard
    - LaRue Tactical Stealth upper receiver group (20" barrel, 13.2" handguard, rifle-length gas system)
    - Magpul XT rail panels
    - Harris bipod (BRM-S variant w/ LaRue Tactical LT130 QD mount)
    - Magpul MBUS Generation 2 front/rear sights

The scope is still being decided on. Even when the build is finished (hopefully within the next year), I would still use iron sights only until I have grown comfortable with them. Then I would consider a scope.

P.S. The rifle will be traveling inside a Pelican 1720 weapon case. To do this, I would have to separate the upper and lower receivers. Would this affect the zero on the scope?

Regarding the separation of the upper and lower during transport, no, it shouldn't affect the zero on the scope.

I'll suggest building a faithful clone. Forget the case. Go to operationparts.com for all the KAC stuff. Especially the gas block with flip up sight for the SAM-R. Don't see it on their website anymore. So send them an email.

$450 For a flip front sight gas block!!!!!!!!!! does it cook and clean or just make you feel like a ballin arm chair commando?

Nice find! Two left. I guess it was to early in the morning for me. Lol!
I spent more on mine, but that was before operation parts was selling them. I still plan to get a sam-r built to spec and to buy a mk12 mod1 upper just not a priority right now..

I have to say I build a SPR Mod 0 pretty much to spec but used a Krieger barrel and it is my favorite rifle to shoot.

Figure out how much you want to spend & what features you will use/won't use and go from there.

+1 for staying closer to the SAM-R but screw getting KAC parts. adding all that magpul stuff is going to kill the look of the gun if your going for a close copy of the SAM-R especialy with the mbus and prs. YHM has a folding sight gas block for around $80. look into getting a midway dragbag when they go on sale instead of the pelican.

Which KAC rear sight does the SAM-R use? There are two 600m ones. Anyone know a part number?

Does the 13.2" rail leave room for the flip up front sight?

Should cover the gas block so no probably not.

I would say use a WOA 18" rifle gas barrel, midwest/troy/ddefense 12" handguards and if you want a flip up front sight gas block the yankee hill ones I've seen worked fine (and they clamp on via allen wrenches).

These guys will sell you the proper case already cut out for you also. Scroll to the bottom of either SPR MK12 product page.

Or build one of these. My favorite.
