I 'sporterized' my C&R and if you feel like doing so, go for it. Just make sure that whatever you do doesn't harm the original condition of the matching parts. Besides that, go nuts!

Not sure why, in the original article, the author is talking about extensively modifying a rifle when, for what is probably the cost of all these mods, you can simply buy a rifle like this already. Why not a synthetic stock? Or, if you can't stand black plastic, why not a laminated one? Why 30-06? Isn't .308 more common by now?

Or get the aforementioned '03 or p-17, and stick it in a Ramline stock, if you don't want to bubba the original stock.

Sounds reasonable to me. You might want to check out the Ruger Scout in 308. It's basically what you want and done nicely. Only down side is that it would likely cost more.

I would just go cruise the gun stores or GB for a used .30-06 and slap a Williams rear sight on it if I were planning on going this route. I have picked up already bubba'd rifles like that for well under $200. I wouldn't bubba them myself, but I see nothing wrong with rescuong one from the scrap heap. Or getting a really good deal on a nice sporter. Or even a good used commercial rifle. And if this were going to be something that I used frequently, I would actually prefer it to be a purpose-built commercial rifle instead of some slapped-together sporterized military rifle of unknown provenance.

Williams makes rear sights for lots and lots of models. Some fit in existing screw holes, some need a couple of holes drilled and tapped. But either way, the cost to do so is minimal.

Because those rifles are far more expensive than a used factory bolt gun. Besides why cut up a piece of history when you can get a cheaper new bolt gun to mess with?
