When getting a muzzle device for you rifle, do you want the diameter of the device to be smaller or larger than the diameter of the barrel where they meet? I'm thinking that it's just a matter of preference as long as the threads are same?

Muzzle device diameter

I think it really depends. In the case of my Savage and the Badger brake the diameter of the barrel determines which brake to get since part of the brake "sleeves" over the barrel.
The best person to answer this question would be ar15barrels or crtguns -
Yeah.. I figured that.. but what to do when you can't buy a muzzle brake that is exactly the same diameter as your barrel? As far as looks go.. I don't care. I just want to know if there would be a functional difference either way because I can't logically think of one.Comment

Functionally, I doubt theres any difference at all.Yeah.. I figured that.. but what to do when you can't buy a muzzle brake that is exactly the same diameter as your barrel? As far as looks go.. Functionally, there is no difference.
It's all about the cosmetics.
Most muzzle devices are larger than the barrels they get installed on.
I can custom blend the barrel and comp after they are indexed together.
This will usually necessitate re-finishing everything afterwards.
Once a barrel and comp have been machined as a pair and re-finished, the seam truly does dissappear.Randall Rausch

I'll have to keep that in mind. Satern is making my barrel and they index a brake free of charge.. but I'm going to guess they don't blend it to make it seamless. I'd call and make sure but they're near imposible to get hold of. I'm just grateful I was able to put an order in 1.5 months ago! I'll for sure going to send my upper for you (AR15Barrels) to assemble.. but I'm just trying to save a few $$$ here and there where I reasonably can.Comment
