    10FP+Muzzle brake = good times

Took both my Savage rifles and my M14 to the range today.

10FP, Badger Brake, 308 - This brake is very effective. And when I say effective I mean it. The rifle had recoil around that of a 223 or less. It had virtually no muzzle flip. I did not bring my hand loads (forgot them) but shot Federal Gold Medal Match in the white box to .6 at 100 yards. I could have done better but I think the heat threw me off.

10fp, Badger Brake, 223 - This brake cut felt recoil to that of probably a 22LR. Muzzle flip was virtually nill and that made for fast follow up shots. Using Wolf Gold 75g 223 I should a .58 after sighting in. I was very pleased with the results. The Nikon scope performed flawlessly. Could not touch the IOR but was very god non the less. The 1-9 twist barrel seemed to stabilize the 75gs fine as well as the 69g. I did'nt shoot my hand loads for a group but I did not have any problem shooting the 200 and 300 plates.

M14 - Hell of a good time. The thing thumped the crap out of my shoulder but functioned and preformed flawlessly. I had a grat time banging the steel plates at 200 and 300 yards with the iron sights. I also came to the conclusion that I am getting rid of the scope and mount I have for it and installing a scout rail and CQB optic of some sort. Maybe an EOtech.

Funny... I keep wondering what to change my M1A to.

I've run an EOTech, it has an Aimpoint now (I like the traditional shape - it can also be mounted lower).

I keep thinking about going with a scope... Was thinking something like the SN3 US Optics in 1.8-10X would be interesting... But, for the cost of an SN3, I think I'd be better off getting the 3-17X and putting it to use on a bolt gun.

I can't quite decide what to do with it... I feel like I want some magnification.

I can easily shoot hold-overs with the aimpoint @ steel plates at 300. 400 is ok, too. I think the EOTech 557 might be a good choice... Thought about that? There's a 308 version.

I really don't know what to do. Let me know when you figure it out. Ha ha.

I am considering turning it into some sort of scout/socom type M14. Maybe getting an 18" barrel installed and a rail system of some sort. I originally was going to do a sniper type build buy then I got my second savage and changed my mind. Not to mention I really like the iron sights on it.

I am thinking something like this.

I have that stock being made right now minus the cheak piece.

I have a SOCOM II and like it, but I would probably trade it for a good 18". I think it's the right choice.

I'm running an Aimpoint with a QRP like that... it needs a cheek riser, still.

The M14 irons are solid irons, too, but honestly (no offense to iron lovers), they're 1950.

I'm curious, why doesn't Aimpoint or EOTech build a red-dot with a tactical elevation knob... I know if you're not doing CQB an ACOG is a better choice (since they're both mil contract companies), but it seems to me a distance calibrated knob adjustable red-dot would be a good choice. It's not hard to do! Hmm... I wonder if I could machine something to screw into the Al cover on the EOTech to do it...

I had an EOtech on my Socom. For some reason, I just can't get used to that sight. Don't know why, guess it's a personal opinion thing. I've settled on a reflex. I really like it now. I agree too, I think I want to eventually go the 18" bbl route...
