Can someone please explain CAL MULTI?

n00b question:

I'm new to AR's so be nice.

Can someone explain what CAL MULTI means? How does it work...?

It is my understanding that if I have a multi cal lower, I can switch out the whole upper assembly to fire a different caliber - is that correct? What else is involved, other than getting different caliber mags?

Also, what calibers can a CAL MULTI fire? Can I switch from .223 to .308?

Before I get flamed, I already did a search for "multi, cal" and got back only 19 hits, none of which fully explained much.

Its like any other lower receiver except instead of saying .223 it says multi. This is for the people who are running .22, 9mm and other builds. A receiver stamped .223 will work exactly the same.

You can use any .223 length or smaller cartridges in a stock lower, I figure that the "cal-multi" thing just covers your a** legally. You can't use .308 since the magwell isn't long enough; you'll have to buy a dedicated .308 lower, but this also lets you use any .308 class cartridges.

It's just a marking, right? It doesn't mean anything... I mean, if it isn't functional, then what does it matter?

Maybe I could cover it up with a unicorn or a pretty little flower so that it's more CA friendly.

We all make mistakes, it's just all too often I will search when people say they have searched but didn't find what they were looking for at which point I will find it. Am I that much better at searching? Probably not but I take the time to look at most of the threads.

I try to be polite in my nudges to search and for the most part will try to provide a link to what they could have found..

I got side-tracked in the 33 pages of the "CalGuns OLL Design Input" thread, and then the 19 pages of the "Calguns Lower in Development PICTURES!!! Vote for your preference." thread. I gave up after that... there's only a certain amount of due diligence I can commit to a search before I simply have to give up and ask.
