I've been doing a lot of digging for a semi-auto rifle and I've been eying the M1A Scout. I read that these things are extremely loud due to the muzzle brake. Are there any mods I can do that will reduce the bang to an acceptable level? I read that neutering a GI flash hider will help, but how do you do that? Can you buy one that comes neutered? I've also thought about getting a Loaded as the longer barrel helps, but I prefer the 18" Scout for flexibility. Hearing protection is good, but I want to be considerate to others. THanks.

M1A Scout Loud?

My scout didn't seem super loud compared to other .308 rifles. I hear it's the SOCOMs that are especially noisy.
Also, if you do put a flash hider on there you will need a mag lock since a flash hider is an evil feature.RLTW

I think the Scout Squad sound is about average for a .308. If I remember right, people are usually referring the loud M1A to the Socom's (Socom II or Socom 16); since their barrels are a little shorter, sometimes some powder aren't finished burning after the bullet left the barrel, hence the louder sound and bigger flash.

I appreciate the comments, was not aware it's about avg for the 308.
Here's what turned me off to the M1A scout: http://m14forum.com/m14/26779-scout-way-too-loud.htmlComment

Yes, there is a mod to quiet the M1A:
But seriously, letting noise levels turn you off the Scout? Guns are loud. Guns with muzzle brakes direct the sound and gasses back towards you to reduce the recoil.Comment

Yes, the socoms are ungodly loud but you shouldn't be shooting without ear protection anyways. Don't know why anyone would pay retail on one of those POS's either.
IMHO the scout is a better rifle than the socom and a custom built AR308 is better than both of them.Comment

I removed the factory brake and replaced it with a direct attach Smith brake. It shortened the OAL by about 2" - it wasn't loud before but it probably is now. Which is fine. Sometimes when I'm plinking with a 22 or 222 I shoot next to people who have brakes, doesn't bother me. I just expect noise & blast when I'm at the range, I think most others do too.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment

I was looking at the AR10, but aesthetically it's not for me. At least i haven't seen anything i liked. I started off wanting an AR15 and bolt action rifle, but was intrigued by the M1A and saw that I could almost have the best of both worlds in one rifle. I just love the tactical stocks for the M1A - Sage EBR, JAE, Troy MCS etc.Comment

Not trying to say one is better than the other and I loved my M14 in Iraq; to each their own, but if you're going to drop probably somewhere between $2-4k on an auto-loading .308/7.62, knowing what's out there would be my top priority. I won't say anything about aesthetics either, because I know that there are "better" ways to pick, but at the end of the day it's you that has to look at the thing. Good luck with the purchase either way.Comment
