marlin 795 jam issue

i just took my recently-bought, used marlin 795 rifle for a shoot. me and a buddy put about 200+ rounds through, but every 2-4 rounds, it would jam or misfeed? the rifle looked clean from the start so i figure no cleaning was necessary. should i have lubed the rifle before/while shooting? being familiar with the m16....nothing solves problems like lubing up the rifle with a little (or a lot) CLP! if its not the lube, could it be the mag or the extractor?
