    .22lr upper question..

Ok so im going to be building my first AR here really really soon but I had a question. Im going to be buying a .22lr upper as well so i can just swap the upper and at least plink around and save some cash. But this is my question, i have read all the rules and stuff and my question is about the bullet button. If i have a AR lower and a .22lr dedicated upper, not just the drop in bolt conversion, do i actually need the bullet button then?? I know if i swap out the upper for something else i know it will have to be on there but just curious if legally it has to be on there. Thanks for the help all!!

No bullet button required with a rimfire upper attached.
