Drop Forge Vs. Billet

Hey all,

Let me start by saying that Calguns is a great resource, and thanks for helping me inform myself about long guns in Ca.

I did a search on this question, but did not find any results.

I have a quick question about OLL's. I recently bought a Double Star lower in anticipation of an AR build. I noticed it was drop forged. Later I saw some billet lowers.

What are the advantages (if any) of billet over drop forged?

The only advantages that I can think of for the billet made ones are that you don't have the forging marks left on the receiver.

Mil-spec requires forged receivers...they're therefore the most common. Cast receivers are still around if you're on a budget. Billet receivers are machined from the solid.

No functional differences...cast are mechanically the weakest & you may find voids or porosity or even cracks.

Billet receivers are novelty items, they'll work just fine.

Most will select a forged receiver as it's what the military uses. I can't think of a real advantage of a billet receiver. You're rifle will work just the same with a forged or billet receiver
