    Hypothetical Question

Is a belt fed .22 AR upper legal in CA? Its not a "magazine per say. I was just pondering this earlier and came accross the link Im attaching. Now in the link it does show it as being select fire. How about a semi only version.

    Your insight is greatly appreciated....

EDIT I suppose I could have posted this in the rimfire section or the legal section too...

I think feeding devices are limited to a 10 round capacity with the exception of rimfire tube feeds.

Yes, a belt fed rifle is legal in Ca. However, it must be configured properly. In the case of a semi auto centerfire rifle it would be easiest to make it "featureless". A maglock for a beltfed is not as simple as it seems. The links/belt would need to be captive (require the use of a tool to be removed from the rifle). There are ways to do it, but featureless is the less painfull route.

As this is a rimfire, it is not subject to the same AW features restrictions. You would simply need to limit the newly aquired belts to 10rds. It would be legal to utilize "legally owned/obtained" belts that have a capacity exceeding 10rds without changing/removing any features.

Ha. I just had an image of a circular 10 round belt. Fire, load empty slot, repeat.

12276.1(d) The following definitions shall apply under this section:
            (1) "Magazine" shall mean any ammunition feeding device.

            that includes belts.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Illegal ... but dang, I want one!

EDIT: To clarify, it would be illegal if the belt is greater than 10 rounds (unless you owned it before the 10 round limit). I suppose that if it were semi-auto only, and you just had a bunch of 10 round belts, you'd be OK. But that would defeat the purpose.
