Please suggest a good scope for an AR-15 (100 yd shooting)

Hi guys, building an flat top AR (first build!). I have a few mil surps with iron sights so I know nothing about optics. What would you suggest for a reasonably priced scope? My shooting will be around 100yds at paper (not a hunter). The rifles is a 20" bull barrel (HEAVY!) 1-8 twist. If I could find a range with more than 100yds, I'd shoot farther, but I think in the Bay Area, 100 yds is about the max. I have crappy vision, so some magnification is good.

This is a target rifle, not a CQ rifle or anything like that. Thanks!

I'm thinking less than $200. Ideally less than $100, but I think that optics are such that you don't get much for less than $100? I could be wrong!

I see that iron sights can be up to $200 (or more!) already for the AR-15. So I figure I'll just go for optics.

The Redfield 2-7x33 is looking good. And you have to buy rings for it too, right?

Are "red dots" OK for target shooting or are they more of a "tactical" solution? As you can tell, I'm a total newb when it comes to optics!

If you're primarily shooting 100+ yards, then you won't be happy with a red dot. Take a look at the scopes the people above have already suggested. Also take a look at the bushnell elite 3200 10x40. That's also a decent scope and can be found for ~200.

im sure some people might cringe at the thought of using such a low priced scope, but the simmons 3X9 scope has worked very well for me on other rifles. ive never installed one on an AR, but the recoil is lite enough that it shouldnt be an issue

yes they are incredibly inexpensive, but ive used them on various rifles for a long time, and they work very well

                        Aim Point

I know they can be pricey, but there well worth the money. I have mine on my M1A. It is set at 200yds and gets 10's and X's at that range. Like I said well worth the money. Doesn't matter where the red dot is, that's where the bullet is going

And I won't be laid a hand on.

100yrds wouldn't necessitate the use of magnified optics. I'd suggest a Red Dot scope. Primary Arms' has a decent knock-off of the Aimpoint Micro available for around $120. I say decent because it holds a zero pretty well on 5.56 caliber rifles

im in the bay area and you can try out my scope before buying. Seriously consider this scope - http://www.eabco.com/TacticalMildot.htm

Its very clear and perfect for 100 yards. Its got a lifetime warranty... so its a no brainer! I have had mine get stuck on 4x and I sent it right back and they sent me a new one. This one is cool too because its got the black or red illuminated retical.

The poster said he has bad vision, so a red dot would not work well for him. Simmons has some better models that you can find for around $200 and I have a Nikon factory refurb 4.5x14 that I got from Natchez for a little more than than, but that depends on when those deals are available.
