Zeroing & Ammo

I'm new to this, so I'm just looking for some advise on how to proceed.

I have a few new 5.56 AR's that I want to zero with BUIS and a red dot sight.

Should I use ammo that I will be using all the time (62gr green tip) or should I use say something like Federal Gold Medal Matchking 77gr to sight the rifles in?

Do i zero the BUIS first, then the BUIS with 1/3 co-witness red dot or should I just zero the red dot by itself (I would rather run the red dot without the BUIS if that is an option, but I do want the BUIS zeroed in case the red dot fails)?

How should I zero my BUIS and Red Dot (what distance, what type of targets, etc.)?

I appreciate any assistance on this topic.

Use what ur going to shoot. It can very as much as 6" difference in some cases.

Ar zero is easy. Take bolt out, place upper on stable bench, point it to POI by looking thru barrel. Once it's zero, look at your RDS and adjust accordingly. When that's zero, shoot it to confirm then zero iron.

just because they may have come from the factory with a mechanical zero, doesnt mean they'll always be 100% zero'd on the gun you put them on.

Yea I think they were zeroed for same plane flat top receivers and rails, dunno if it would work with a fsb gasblock. But it works great with my Adams arms piston block, it must be same plane.

no need to zero with match ammo unless that's what you plan to shoot. I zeroed my rifle the first time out and haven't really touched it much since. I've been load testing and i see no point in re-zeroing the rifle until i find a load i like. and even then, i will still end up shooting cheap ammo or hunting rounds, which will likely change zero. In my experience, zero hasn't changed more than a few inches when switching ammo, and that's typically just a vertical adjustment.

when i zeroed my AR i bore sighted as mif slim described, and then shot at 25 yds. once i was pretty close at that distance i moved it out to 100 and did a final zero.

I used the "son" method. My son qualifies expert at 500 yards with iron sights. I convinced him to come up from Camp Pendalton and show me how a Staff NCO does it!

No match ammo needed to zero. You and your rifle should be able to run with what you brung. If you battle zero at 25 yards then you will be POI (point of impact) good for 200 yards. Fire at 100 yards and figure out your 100 yard POI and either figure out how many clicks it takes to go back to 10x and remember it for when you want to go past 100 yards. Or leave it at BZ (battle zero) 25/200 and remember what your 100 yard POI is.
If you need a hand go to an Appleseed, you will get zeroed and learn some good stuff.

A 50/200 works for most if your running an aimpoint you can hit 300 with a dot hold over.

Zero your irons then co-witness the red-dot to th irons.
