Thanks to SpeedTribe for pointing me in the right direction. He suggested I look at the add on rails to make sure none of them were pushing against the gas block. I checked and they all cleared but it led me to check the Noveske QD sling point I had screwed on: http://noveskerifleworks.com/cgi-bin...since=&status= Turns out the QD point was too close to the receiver and there just wasn't enough space for the thing to completely clear the barrel. Now its all liined up and ready to, just need to find the time to take it out. Thanks for everyone else's suggestions and ideas as well.
Just put together a new .308 upper (DPMS platform). Here is a pertinent part's list: DPMS upper receiver, Rainier Arms Ultra Match 16" barrel, Rainier low pro gas block, midlength gas tube, BABC 7.62, and Troy TRX-E .308 rail/tube.
Here's the problem: I used the DPMS .308 Claw for installation and PRI barrel nut wrench. Barrel went on fine with no hiccups, no cross threaded threads, torqued to the proper torque, etc. Gas tube and BABC were the same, no issues.
I placed the TRX handguard on and it looks fine, but after tightening it down I notice that it appears to be leaning to the right toward the muzzle end. I broke it down and then re-assmbled but still had the same problem.
I contacted Troy and as always they had great CS and were helpful. They returned the handguard and actually shipped out a new handguard, barrel nut, and all three rail portions. The packaging slip said returned old rail as rail was defective. I was hoping they had looked at it and saw an obvious flaw but after installation I am back at square one: a barrel and handguard that are not parallel.
I contacted Rainier next. They were also helpful and suggest I swap the original barrel nut for the new one. I was thinking the same thing as it's the cheapest and easiest option to check next. they were hesitant to say it was their barrel and wanted me to check the barrel nut and upper first before sending them back the barrel for a check.
No, sometime this week I'll find time to swap the barrel nut and may just order another .308 upper receiver just to check it against the current one. the upper was purchased used, looks in great shape, with no signs of abuse or defect. The barrel looks centered or evenly spaced from the top to the bottom of the tube (it doesn't lean toward 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock, only leans towards 9'oclock and away from 3 o'clock.)
Any other suggestions from anyone else is appreciated. I sold my last .308 upper so there is no comparing there and I don't want to break down any of my friend's uppers just to compare. Here's a few pics:
