Rem 700 SPS Tac Stock touching barrel

I'm interested in getting a Rem 700 SPS Tactical in 308 for hunting and target shooting. My one concern is with the free floating barrel and synthetic stock. When slight pressure is applied to the stock, such as using a bipod or a bench, the stock flexes and touches the barrel. I've always been told that's a big NO NO. I do not have the budget to replace the stock. I would like to get some feedback from shooters that use the out of the box set up. Does the stock touching the barrel effect accuracy?

    Thanks for the advice.

I have one and it's fine.

Here is a good write up on it including the stock issue.

"he rubber is molded over a ribbed plastic frame like many injection molded stocks, and like those stocks, this stock is not as stiff as I would like a stock to be. In fact, while using a bipod, the forend flexes enough to touch the barrel slightly. While it did not seem to affect the accuracy of this particular rifle, it is still a precision rifle no-no that should be avoided. This stock has the two aluminum pillars which work well enough for an economy rifle like this, obviously glass or aluminum bedding would be preferred, but that would raise the price considerably. The forend also only has a single stud without a specific 2nd stud dedicated for a bipod, making another minor inconvience."

"The gun has played a critical role in history. An invention which has been praised and denounced... Served hero and villain alike... And carries with it moral responsibility. To understand the gun is to better understand history."

I did alot of research on them and the stock seems to be the only complaint. Not always because of accuracy issues but because they just plain suck. I purchased a varmint yesterday and I'm going to shoot the crap out of it before I even consider changing the stock. I don't hunt, shoot comp., or any of that so no need for a change(right away).

Try Stock, Trigger, Boltface! Go with the Tikka Tac or Varmint and avoid those issues. I have heard .5 out ot the box for a Remmy is a pipe dream?

it depends on how badly the stock impinges on the barrel and where it impinges.

the solution is to simply relieve the pressure point by sanding...

for a synthetic stock its not going to big a real big issue, but if it does bug you, a little bit of sanding will do the trick. the problem of stock affecting accurancy really comes into play with older wooden stocks, when the moisture in the stock gets hot from firing and starts to warp the stock,, putting excessive pressure on your barrel. synthetic stocks dont have near the warp factor.... but like donw and i said, a little sanding can really help you out. oh, and forget that dollar bill trick, you want at least a business card width between your barrel and stock.

just sand down the parts that touch when it flexes.

or put $5 a week into a jar for a new stock.

Thanks for all the replies. The more I shop around the more choices I have. I've checked out the SPS Varmit and the Weatherby Vanguard sub moa TR. I still haven't decided on barrel length yet either. Thanks.

Not a pipe dream but a reality. My buddies SPS tactical shoots under .5 with ANY load you give it. 2.80-2.90 it doesnt matter. SMK or AMAX bullets, it doesnt care..Varget to rl15 to 4064 , it doesnt matter. Shoots better than my 4000.00 bolt gun so, get the idea that they cant or dont shoot that good out of the boxright outta your head.

                            Hi

I have a 700 SPS Varmint in 243. that I picked up about 2 months ago. The rifle shoots well, but it is no .5 MOA out of the box. I have another .243, Savage 110 that will consistently out shoot the 700, getting an easy sub .5 MOA, old synthetic stock and all. Hell, even my old 30-30 bolt guns can out shoot the 700. The 700 has a lot more potential to shoot well, but it will take some help.

                            Just my thoughts.

I have a bare bones Rem 700 SPS .308 in the Hogue stock, 10x SS, Harris bipod. Here's a semi zoomed in pic of me and a buddies warm up target last Thurs. out at Panoche. 350 yards and those are 8" ballons. We each took aside, called our shots and busted all 8 in 8 shots, 2 each from prone and 2 each using a camera tripod as a base.

                              No zoom:

Do I want a better stock? Yeah, and I'm saving my pennies for one, but so far I'm not a good enough precision shooter to really notice. I'm sure with time I'll learn to look down on the Hogue stock, but so far it has performed great. And obligatory pic of the stick.
