    Long range AR15 discussion

Hey everyone just wanted to start a discussion on long range shooting with AR15's. This past Thursday my buddy and I took our weekly trip to Angeles Shooting Range and decided to try out some long distance shots (3-600 yards).
With my 20'' upper I have an original Colt carry handle scope with 4x fixed zoom and on my 16'' setup I have a midlength Spikes upper with a Vortex Strikefire red dot sight. Both rifles were hitting the red 600 yard steel plate to the far left. It was a windy day 15-20mph winds but with some compensation and my buddy spotting we all in all did pretty well. My 20'' AR was doing much better 5 out of 10 shots. But the red dot did well too with the included 2x magnifier. I believe the target is 18''-24'' thats what one of the employees told us. I would like to see who else is reaching out that far with their .223/556 AR's it would be nice to hear some feedback. As far as ammo we used Walmart Federal bulk pack, Winchester .55gr 556, ATI 62gr and some American Eagle .223 from Turners. On another note in my opinion both these setups were really not that expensive and even though a red dot is not practical for groups on paper I think its excellent for plinking steel even at long distance. For anyone debating on a red dot I would not hesitate to try out a Vortex this thing has been a great purchase for me and it has proven itself for many many rounds. Thanks for reading my thread this is my first one for shooting discussion so all stories and info would be great. Thanks!

Some of the guys shoot to 1,000 yards at Cuyama with their fast twist 20" Service Rifle uppers.

If you're going to regularly shoot that far you should look into a different optic as well, since the Aimpoint, even with magnifier, is not the right sight. There's a reason why it's called M68 CCO (Close combat optic) in the military.

Look into an ACOG ore Leupold Mark AR scope and see what your groups look like then. The 20" upper is capable of pretty good accuracy at those ranges.

I'm impressed. I've only been out to 300yds but was able to get hits on a 12" plate with an Eotech.
I can't wait to hit steel at 600.

My 20" upper is made by FN and to answer rero360's question above the muzzle brake was on the upper when I bought it but it has very little recoil. My red dot has a 4moa reticle. When I was shooting my 20" out to 600 yards there was no bipod used and I was resting my hand on a barska spotting scope box. It's nice to hear other peoples experiences can't wait to hear more.

I haven't seen the new Tron. Yet. I'm old, I saw the first one at the theatre...

Yeah, since Sinclair came out with that F-class bipod, you should see what some people have been making themselves....
I saw one on the line two weekends ago that looked like it was made from half of a bed-frame, was about 3 feet wide.

I'm the friend mentioned in the OP. Here is what I was using for the majority of the day:

The rest of the time, I was using his 20". I must say, I was pleasantly surprised to see that our rifles could shoot so consistently at that distance, especially with the budget ammo! If there wasn't as much wind as there was, we would have been hitting the plates a lot more than we were.

The day get the itch for an AR10 going again.. haha

Btw, killshot44, that is a pretty sweet setup!

Thanks, man. I just got jealous. Your wife is awesome. My wife is -such- a girl. I have as yet been unable to convince her to even touch any of my EBR's.

Plus the first time she fired my 9mm, she almost dropped it, and after the first(and only) birdshot shell out of a 12 ga., the gun was nearly thrown at me.

Anyway, sorry off topic from the OP's idea. Right, ranged uppers. I have a 20" heavy contour (chrome lined) rifle that I put together from a Del-ton kit. Millet TRS-1 scope in a GG&G accucam mount. After zeroing in @50yds it can only miss the steel plates at "a place to shoot" in the event of severe shooter error. I think they only go out to about 420 yds.

I know this one would do 600 though, easy. And all I shoot through it is the "junk" ammo.
