First time shooting precision rifle. FUN.

Finally got my new Remi 700p out of jail this week, so of course took it to Angeles today to break it in and sight it in. It was hot, maybe 90f, with a breeze on my back.

What fun, once I got past cleaning it every shot for the first box. On the second box, I cleaned it every two, three, then six shots. Interesting thing, this gun seems to like a fouled barrel, as my first shot would go left maybe 1/3" from the rest, and it did not really matter from shot two to shot 6. After that first shot, I did do a 5 shot group with the last of the second box which was Hornady Match 155gr stuff.

You can see the 'flyer' fouling shot to the left, then 5 shots measuring about 9/16" c to c. The two above it in one hole were previously shot before cleaning it.

I'm happy as a clam, considering it's factory ammo, factory gun. Just put my 3-18 IOR scope in low IOR rings on a Badger 20deg rail.

I was there from maybe 10:30am till almost 4pm, and only shot 40 rounds! I usually crank 300+ from an AR or a hundred from one of my milsurps.

Now I just have to figure out my table setup- It was a pita to use a sandbag up front- no easy elevation adjustment. I've got a Harris bipod, but I don't think it's as stable as a sandbag. I'm leaning towards getting a benchrest, can anyone here suggest a nice one that does not break the bank? I also need to bring a thick cushion for the chair LOL as I'm a short woman, and resting the buttstock on a bag makes it a stretch for me to get over the gun for a good cheek-weld.

I remember when I used to blast through a few hundred rounds every range visit...now 50 rounds through the 700p is plenty. Good job with your rig and groups as well, you should check out and participate in the CaPRC matches at angeles every month I guarantee you will be hooked and have a good time. The harris bipod is good if you have the swivel type but get yourself a good cheekpad to get proper eye alignment/cheek weld. Things only get better from this point on for you, reloading, shooting matches and hitting everything your crosshairs are on. Hope to see you some time at the matches check out www.caprc.com

Just remember over cleaning a rifle wears out a barrel more than shooting it. For further info go to sniperhide forums, or CAPRC forums...

Nice rifle setup there. I would shoot more for practice! And as always practice makes better
Shoot to Kill not to Wound !

LOL yep. I read here, and in speaking with the guy at the reloading shop, that the first 20 rounds or so, you should shoot clean shoot chean... So I did. Guess I'll just shoot till I see the groups open a bit, then clean. I like the foaming cleaners, less patches, less brushing.

bcrich- yep I've been reloading since the 90s, and got the Redding neck, regular set, and comp seating die and some Sierra MKs and Fed brass. Just have not had the time to reload any yet. I need to test the waters at longer distance- this is really fun. Yep, looking into cheekrests and guess I'll try the Harris I have (it swivels) and thanks for the link, will check it out.

            Congrats on the new rifle.

Here is the correct technique for breaking in a new barrel:
