just adding to the searchable knowledge base here.
i was performing my first AR-15 lower-assembly build yesterday when i ran into a small snag. the rock river arms ambi star safety selector has a set screw in the shaft that obviously holds the right-side switch on the shaft. but once i'd pulled the screw (1.5mm allen key worked; i didn't have anything in SAE even in the ballpark), i couldn't figure out how to get that side off the shaft to push it through the lower.
google told me nothing, so i put in a call to RRA. i got through on the second try, and the people on the phone were very helpful (receptionist, sales person and tech guy in that order). turns out the right-side switch is on a tapered pin; the tech guy said to wedge a thin flathead screwdriver between the underside of the switch and the shaft and just lever the thing off there. true enough, easy as pie.
once the shaft is pushed through the lower, he said, just reinsert the right-side switch and give it a little tap with a soft-head hammer to seat it properly, then reinstall the set screw. he suggested a drop of loctite on the set screw -- not because there's much real chance that it'll shoot loose, but just to be sure because it's the FCG.
other ambi safety switches appear to be built in a similar style, but a web search told me little (as i mentioned), and if you didn't know the answer you might be hard-pressed to find it. if this issue has you stuck during a build and google turns up this thread, you're welcome.
i'd endorse the RRA switch in general, if you're not concerned with deviating from the standard AR-15 manual of arms. i can select "fire" with my thumb on either side of the grip, and it's really easy to switch to "safe" with the large knuckle on my index finger wrapped around the little knob while still holding the grip with that hand.
