Thoughts? Yankee Hill Machine Black Diamond Specter XL Top End Upper

I have a RAW lower that I am thinking about moving from a target rifle to something more practical and fun. I looked though several of the gas piston AR's and most seem to carrier tilt or have other problems when paired with a non-OEM lower. I am leaning back towards a DI upper, any thoughts on the YHM stuff? Looking for something above commercial grade that will handle a few carbine courses, supposedly YHM's stuff is all mil-spec; never really heard of them before.

I like the 16" barrel with the longer rail, gives me something to grab onto so this is what I am targeting.

Shark, hope this is in-stock if I get the thumbs up.

I have a 14.5in + FH (16 in total) one and I love mine. Only complaint I hear from others is that it is heavy. But I don't have a problem with mine.

          Ditto.
          Also big.

The running joke is the Diamond rail is a "soup can". It works fine if you have large hands.

I like it, but there are other options that I like better.

Did a search to see where else this joke was said, turns out google's only answer was right back to this thread....

I have the rail (with a 26'' WOA 1:8 barrel), it is heavy and if you're not doing any bench shooting i'd look elsewhere.

              It's deep.

I read it here a round a little over a year ago when I was planning out my first AR build.

Ended up going with a Troy tube.

YHM uppers are simply beautiful. They look even better in person. Problem is, nobody seems to have them in stock! I'm waiting for my Specter-length 1:7 barrel upper to become availabe as we speak! Should have bought it when I saw it at the gun show a few months back.

Oh, and as far as quality is concerned, YHM is an OEM supplier for many manufacturers (including Bushmaster). Todd Jarrett also uses a YHM rig for competition, and if its good enough for him....

Right... and yhm diamond series uses the same material Daniel defense 12'' handguard does T6 temper 6061 aluminum alloy. Difference is in the appearance/weight and 200 dollars.

I didn't say it was poor quality. YHM makes good stuff... one of the few makers of 1/9 twist that I trust.
The "soup can" reference is to it's size. That should have been clear with my comment about large hands.

That looks cool actually, but damn thats alot of weight or so it looks. I never got into huge rail systems but admittedly, that does look cool.

Here is my YHM upper. Sorry for crappy Cell Phone Pix. It's Heavy but it doesn't bother me and it feels sturdy as hell.

My first upper was that Specter XL. Then it got stolen. Very nice, but heavy. YHM rails tend to be on the heavier side.

just go with the lightweight if its an issue.

I have a YHM LW upper and absolutely love mine.
