DFG - They carry M1A in their cars!

I'm watching "Wild Justice" on the National Geographic channel - it was the Marijuana episode. The camera crew pans to the hardware in the Warden's truck, I see a shotgun and a M1A SOCOM. Sweet! They definitely need some serious firepower when dealing with the growers in the Santa Cruz mountains and the like. Scary business when the opposition is armed with AKs.

According to the DFG firearms manual I have M-14/M1A, 870, & G22s are standard issue.

Vader, thats really neat. I contacted a DFG recruiter awhile back to see if I could get on a ride along but the wardens here in SCC rotate often as well as head out to support other areas of CA. Maybe its time I touch base again to see if there's a willing warden.

I went on a ride along with Boyd and he had a mini 14. I ask him if that was standard issue, and he said it up to the warden, they can carry whatever they want.

I think the DFG needs more tech to really help them do their job. Without those guys, there wouldn't be anything left for us to enjoy. I'm glad to see them utilizing K9s out there, too.

Wow, you can do a ride along with the Wardens? Cool. I met some really nice Rangers when I was up in Alaska. They said it's the best job in the world for someone who loves the outdoors.

Shotguns are a must-have. Did Boyd have the Mini-14 worked on or was it straight from the armory? I like the Mini 14 for it ruggedness and weight, but you gotta love the M1A SOCOM for it's ability to reach out. I'm headed to the Chabot on Monday. I think I'll match my Ranch Rifle against my cousin's SOCOM. I think he'll kick my butt on the range so I'll just pelt him with my ejected cases. That'll leave a dent in his head!

Yeah, I was watching an episode where one of the guys had his M1a pointed at a house in some neighborhood when they were taking down some 16 year old kid selling piranhas. My first thought was "that's a big f***in gun to be shooting in a residential area." Slight overkill there and potential for a lot more damage than intended.
I think those guys are awesome, but let's show some discretion.

M1A's used by DFG officers that I know of are private purchase, semi-auto.

If surplus '14's were available to DFG officers, through issue or private purchase, one guy in particular that I know would have one.

Not calling you out, just posting what I know from up close.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

I thought posts should have some kind of content.

The DFG and other agencies are becoming more and more militarized, including the regular use of military style rifles because of the war on drugs and the associate criminal element it has created.

I just heard the other day that the DFG is looking to replace their M14s with SCAR 17s. I haven't seen any documentation, but this kind of stuff is getting out of control.

Poaching problems, fine, that's understandable (unless you consider someone taking game on their own property w/o licensing etc to be poaching. Another government overstep that could use it's own thread entirely), but this isn't Africa where criminal enterprises are poaching to supply a black market demand and toting AKs and FALs (starting to sound repetitive now).

Not correct. About 10 years ago Cal DFG received surplus M14's with selector locks from DOD. These are full auto rifles, bit locked off to semi. These are not private purchase.

In watching that program, and the last time I looked at photo's in their weapons manual, all the rifles had the selector lock, so they are M14's, not M1A's.
