    AK chamber problem?

Spent brass is expanding in the chamber to the point that I can't stick it back in the chamber all the way. If I force the spent brass in the chamber gets stuck. Also if I stick an unfired bullet in the chamber it has a tiny bit of play. Is this normal for AK's or is the barrel shot out and or dangerous to shoot? should I build a new one?
    Thanks

That sounds like a textbook case of excessive headspace (and freakishly dangerous worn chamber)

What type of AK is it?

I'd have a gunsmith check it out, but I have a sneaky suspicion he's going to tell you its time to take OLL yeller out behind the barn.

      Your problem doesn't sound cheap.

I don't think it'd cost THAT much to have the barrel replaced. Or maybe my gunsmith has great prices

yeah, I think its time to take "oll yeller out behind the barn" before I get hurt or something.

It would be fun to cut a chamber insert and make a mag adapter that allowed you to shoot 7.62x25 out of it (thats what I'd do with a worn out ak)

Sounds expensive. I think it would be easier just to make a new one.

If you did the work yourself it would be just cost of materials (you need lathe access tho)

To repair it yourself If you have AK building tools You could probably replace the barrel/bolt/front trunion with ones from a new rommy G kit, sell off the leftovers and have a net cost of about 50$

Do you have a no-go headspace gauge? How old is the barrel? How far does the the spent shell stick out. There is some play in my chambers from virgin barrels. Pics???

I'd almost be willing to try getting a Romy kit and see if you can stick the barrel into the trunnion, maybe install the kit's bolt, and check the headspace. Romy kits are pretty cheap...

By the sound of it it may close on a no-go,You should try and pick up a field guage and check it with that. For that matter you should just get a whole set of guages

The barrel was pretty well used when I got the kit. Its a 1967 Romanian Ak. Can you stick a spent shell back in the chamber all the way? b/c I can't.

On my aks spent rounds stick out about an extra 1/16" with firm finger pressure.

Thats a really helpful link, but how do you reset the headspace if it's off?

My spent casings also stick out about an extra 1/16 of an inch. Weird.
