AR Upper for range use

I want to buy a new upper in .223/5.56 and would like some suggestions. I don't shoot competitively, I don't hunt, I'm not worried about zombies or SHTF. This is purely for range use. I usually shoot at Angeles so max distance is 600 yards. I am going to add a scope and bi-pod so I would like it to have a free float hand guard. Price range: around $750 for the complete upper, but the cheaper, the better.

I'm an average shooter at best and, if lucky, only get out to the range about once a month. I don't reload and will be using the cheapest ammo I can find, So I don't need something like the LaRue OBR. This is just something to plink with.

Input on the 3 choices above or any others I should look into?

I'd actually recommend dpms. It's lower priced but its built for accuracy. For casual shooters it's great.
From my experience (the 2 dpms uppers I've had, one traded one kept) they're heavier than comparable uppers because the barrel is thicker. Aside from that, it's dead on.

Just about any AR upper.. Just find the better deal and thats the one.

I'm fairly happy with my JSE upper(not with their customer service)

My 18inch upper wouldve been less than 400 but I wanted a Vc-1.

Just make sure you inspect your upper upon arrival.

and that's the problem. There are too many choices. The 3 listed we just after a very short 5 minutes search. There are still so many companies to look at.

I would say go with a Spike's mid-length and add a Troy TRX rail on it. That'll run you about $700 and you'll have a great shooter, solid fore-rail and mil-spec parts.

With a cheapy 4x scope, my Spike's upper got me 2 MOA using 55g surplus at 100 yds.

Never seen cheaper than a JSE Surplus upper. They have different deals every month or so. Mine is perfect and I love it.

Another one to look at would be Del-Ton. I have been happy with the ones I have.

I second the recomendation for a Spikes upper. A good high end spec'ed upper at a decent price.

Can not make any comments on the uppers you listed, no experience with any of those.

DPMS is good. I had a 24" Bull Barrel from them, shot sub-moa I was happy...I didnt keep it long though as I didnt shoot that kind of sport any more so I sold it. If I had to do it all over again, I would go the same route. I dont care if its a "inferior" brand, if its just range time, it serve its purpose.

I have one and lovvvve it. Not necessarily the best company according the local "experts" but it is no where near the cheaper companies when it comes to quality. I have been nothing but happy with my RRA with about 10K+ through it. -Ben

If all you're doing is punching paper from a bench, then get the cheapest one you can find.

BTW, $700 is way too much for a bench blaster.

I have the 20" varmint upper from RRA, its been accurate enough for my demands of it and am able to hit the steel at 600 at angeles with my ACOG with ease, with a higher powered scope I'm sure I'd be able to be even more accurate.

You really can't go wrong with the RRA, although if it was me all over again and the prices were similar, I would go with the WOA, I've heard nothing but good about them and plan on getting one of theirs eventually for competitions.
