I seem to remember reading somewhere that the ones in Big5 have been modified somehow--something welded on, or drilled out or whatever, to make the GL permanently nonfunctional.

Yes, Romanian SKSs can be shipped to a dealer in California. Many Romanian SKSs are over 50 years old, so they can also be shipped directly to a C&R FFL in California.

Does Classic Arms really have Romanian SKSs in stock? I know they've had them in the past, but their web site doesn't show any right now.

are tapco tactical stocks legal for SKS in California? a friend has a Drananov on his but i don't like the length. having an adjustable butt stock would be my choice but is it legal here? my old wooden stock is getting a bit beat up, and is too short.

This thread is like it is out of 2004 or something. Where have you all been?

First, it is debatable on what an "SKS" is. A Yugo M59 could be argued to not be an SKS. So let's just assume that Russian SKSs are actually SKSs. If this is the case, then you cannot have an SKS with a detachable magazine period. It doesn't matter that it doesn't have any evil features. No detachable magazine.

Most stock SKSs or variants are the original bullet button equipped rifles. You can use a bullet to push the button behind the trigger guard that pops the trigger guard out of the rifle. Once the trigger guard is free, then you can remove the fixed 10 round magazine. If the bullet that freed that button was not considered a tool, then all SKSs would be detachable magazine rifles. However, because a bullet is considered a tool, the standard SKS is not a detachable magazine rifle.

Knowing that, if your SKS has the standard fixed magazine, then it can have as many evil features as it wants. The only reason the grenade launcher on the Yugos are illegal is because grendade launchers are just plain illegal.

So any fixed magazine SKS is legal. Any detachable magazine non-sks (Chinese Type-56) is legal as long as there are no evil features on the rifle.
www.tenpercentfirearms.com was open from 2005 until 2018. I now own Westside Arms.

I've never owned an SKS, and I've only handled one briefly.

The one I handled had a button behind the "mag" (more like an angled floor plate that functions similarly to the plate on the bottom of Rem 700 rifles and other bolt actions). The button released the rear of the mag, but the front remained attached via a hinge that as best as I can tell can't be detached without tools.

Is this the standard setup on SKSs? Is this a "non-detachable" mag? As best as I can tell, this setup can only be loaded via stripper clips/top loaded.

It's an SKS or M59 or whatever - leave it as-is and you're legal in CA. If you want a "detachable" mag 7.62x39 rifle, get an AK (with or w/o a bullet button depending on evil features) or a stock Saiga.
