M1 Garand or M1A/M14 semi-auto: Since you can't buy magazines with a capacity greater than 10, you may as well go with a hard hitting .30 cal semi-auto.

Remington 870 12 Gauge: One shotgun can cover home defense, hunting, and clay games with the appropriate barrel.

Full size 1911: Again, since you are limited to 10 rounds or less, you may as well use a .45 Auto. *Exception* If you live in a county where you can get approved for CCW, then get a compact Glock.

Once those are covered, you can get your OLL, your wondernines, your wheelguns, fancy O/U shotguns, hunting rifles, .22lr plinkers, milsurps, etc.

ACCURATE bolt or semi 30-.06 or .308: Ammo cost isn't much different than .223 and you can take down anything up to about the size of an elk

Rem 870 with one bird barrel and one buck barrel

Handgun that fires either 10mm or .357 magnum

I agree wholeheartedly, what a great site - especially for the rare breed that is the Kalifornia gun owner.

I've researched as I've acquired each weapon in the last couple years, sold off some pieces, added new, so today (it'll change tomorrow with newer technology & guns ) I'd say:
                Mossberg 590 / Remingtion 870 12 gauge
Sprinfield M1A or AR in .308
Springfield XD or Glock in .45
                (I'd also add a .22 rifle as a 4th, but that wasn't the question...)

If you only had three, they should be a pistol, shotgun and carbine/combat rifle with alot of magazines for the pistol and carbine.

                        1 - Pistol - I prefer a larger caliber such as 40S&W / 45ACP or 10mm

1 - Shotgun - Any pump action 12ga, my personal choice would be a Mossy 590A1

1 - Rifle - AR15 rifle would be my choice for overall versatility, but any 308 would do just as well.

Why you ask? Compatability in the field. 40S&W or 45ACP would be very easy to find ammo for, same goes for 12ga, .223 and .308 rounds when SHTF or the impending zombie attack.

                            My top three would be...
                            1. 308 bolt action
                            2. 223 carbine AR
                            3. Glock 40 S&W

If I had one more to choose it would be Mossberg 590.

Only 3? That's tough...tough. If I HAD to whittle it down.

                              1. Shotgun - Mossberg 590A1
                              2. Carbine - AR
                              3. Handgun - S&W .357 Revolver (Model 66 would be my choice)

Not having a .308 bolt action would haunt me daily, though.
                              Non illigitamus carborundum.
