    hardsided flying gun case

im looking for a good hardsided gun case that I can store guns in whiile im flying to Montana next deer season. I saw the pelican gun cases but those are way too much. I've been looking at the SKB Freedom Double Rifle Case

I use the SKB 4 rifle case it holds 2 guns scoped 2 pistols and all of the ammo for 4 guns. I have an older case and wish I had the wheel kit. These cases are very well made. I replaced a battered aluminum case and have never been happier.

im proably brining a savage 111, ar-15a1 retro OLL, and ruger gp-100 4 inch. I figure the longguns will fit in the case and if im luckey the ruger will also, if that dosent work I will use the hard case that came with it.

Sometimes you can buy 'blem' Starlight rifle cases for $120ish + shipping - they advertise these on SniperCountry (search for posts by "Brack Wilson").

Got mine in 2002; mine had a small defect in the gasket groove I partially repaired. (I really don't need a seal for my uses anyway.)

When I fly with an AR, a FAL and a pistol, I use my Starlight case.

When I fly with just an AR carbine and maybe a pistol, I use my smaller Pelican 1750.

The hardside cases are great for flying but suck when you get to where you're going.

What we did was cut out all the foam and then back our guns in soft cases. Guns are protected, and easy to transport at your destination.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

I've actually been really happy with the Sportsmans Guide "house brand" cases -- their "Guide Gear" stuff. I've flown several times with them from SFO to Idaho, South Dakota and Florida for shooting events without problems. The finish scratches easily, but at this price point, who cares? I accidentally popped off a couple of the little plastic "corner guards" (which are really just for show IMO) last week shoving them over the ribs in a pickup bedliner. I'd say that's pretty durable for three years of rough handling with no troubles. For less than $60 (I paid $45 or so a few years back) I don't think you can beat them.

I like my Pelican case better than my SKB case.

SKB cases are kind of shoddy. Their rifle cases are okay, their guitar cases are pretty crappy and their equipment rack cases truly suck.

Pelican cases are brittle, and I've seen a bunch of them break. They don't survive drops very well.

I prefer Hardigg and Starlight, personally.

The SKB rifle case should be plenty for flying though. All the other cases I mention are more durable than necessary.

I'm headed out for a competition soon and I wanted a little clarification first. Is it a hard-shelled case within a case or can I check in the lockable hard-shelled case by itself?

For example, I'll be throwing my AR and G17 into this Winchester hard case that has combination locks:

                        Will this work fine?

Hard sided case on their own are fine as long as they are lockable. TSA will want to open the case, verify gun is unloaded, have you sign a document and place inside the case and lock it up.

+1. These are great cases. Mine have done the CA-MT trip many times, plus a few other hunting trips, and have yet to fail. In fact, even the TSA guys in Bozeman are impressed. They seem a little overkill for the trips to the range, but the wheels make them easier to handle.
