Scope or Red Dot

As I said, earlier, I just picked up a SOCOM 16. Since my old eyes are not what they used to be, I am debating the optics. I do plan to mount a rail where the front sling swivel attaches and attach a laser. Beyond that, I am debating mounting either a red dot or long eye relief scope, for the Scout Rifle concept.(yes I know that there is a "Scout", but the SOCOM uses the same forward mount). Gentlemen, I would like a few recommendations on both scopes and red dots. Based on experience, not hearsay. In scopes, I prefer Leopold, Redfield or Weaver, but will listen to any opinion. I've used both an Eotech and an Aimpoint on my SOCOM. I like the way the Aimpoint looks, but the Eotech is a far superior optic.

Now, though, I'm debating what to do. The rifle is capable of so much more. Last time I went to Angeles I forgot an extra battery and the Aimpoint died. I decided to play around with the irons again. The ROs and I were hitting steel out to 500yds (600 is hard to see from the right side without an optic).

It got me to thinking i really need to scope it up. I'm debating what to do.

I'm not a big fan of the Scout scopes. Small field of view, low magnification...

I bought the stripper clip guide picatinny rail from Sage and I'm thinking of doing a standard scope mounting. My first choice is the US Optics SN3 1.8-10X, but it's expensive (~2k). There are also a lot of ~2-8X scopes I'm considering, too (Leupy, Nightforce, IOR, ...).

The other thing I've thought about is a flip to side with a 3X or 4X magnifier and the Eotech or Aimpoint. I tried this with my Larue/3X but the Larue mount doesn't fit on the Sage picatinny. Go figure.

What do you expect to get out of the rifle? Are you going to sit on a bench and clang steel? If the steel is big enough then irons are fine or a red dot. Oh yeah you got a socomm those iron sites suck. Sorry but you could park a truck on the front site. If you want to use irons at distance change the front site.

My eyes aren't what they used to be either but then neither is a lot of stuff.

I've shot a scout with 2.5 power lupy eer scope it was ok but 10" plates at 300 were't any fun. I shot a scout with a Trijicon Accupoint 1.25 to 4 power mounted with a conventional scope mount that was much faster to shoot close and easier to shoot long range.
