    keltec?

I am looking for a semi auto battle rifle, capable of hitting a man size Target out to 500yds. would the keltecs be capable of this? I don't want an ar, so I can stay away from the bb. Would like it to be a 223. Anyother viable options other than the keltec? looked at the Sig556, but it seems to fall into the aw category.

The SU-16 does everything I ask of it. But then I'm not asking the same as you, I would say "No". It's no battle rifle, and IMO the 223 at 500 is asking a lot, I'm sure with great glass you can get 500 but why not get the right tool for the job.
I'd increase your budget and change caliber. I'm sure someone will chime in with some suggestions.

Remington makes a model 700 chambered in .223. Also look at a RAA Saiga in .223, although I have no idea if they are accurate to 500 yards.

If you're going to push .223 out to 500 yards, you're going to need a fast twist rate and a heavy bullet. Also, if the Sig 556 isn't a battle rifle, I wouldn't call the Kel tec one. If you want .223, I'd go with an 18 or 20 inch AR with at least a 1 in 8 twist rate. If you really want to shoot long range and have a "battle rifle", I'd go with an FAL or M1A or something of the like.

I've yet to see anyone do anything (within reason, lol) with a $700-$1000 AR15 which could not be done with a KelTec SU16CA. I am certain there are more accurate rifles in this range, I'm just noting my own experience. I'm also of the opinion that your average AR in that price range is more rugged and will probably hold up better under heavy use.

It seems to me that the major limitation is the .223/5.56 round itself. You're going to have to go to something like a .308 to get that 500yd range accuracy consistently.

Definitely would not call the SU-16 a battle rifle. Its a fun back-pack gun and range gun though. I have one and love it but 500 yards would be very hard. If you want 500 yards, a good AR or bolt action is best.

If you want a tough "battle" rifle on a budget, check out the Saiga line of rifles.

I'll be honest, I had to look up what a kaltec SU16CA is, and damn is that one ugly gun.

Why don't you just go featureless if you don't want a bullet button?

Beware of the SIG 556. SIG needs to improve the rifle. The clip that holds the folding stock in place is junk and it breaks. The rifle is front heavy. I was not impressed. After shooting the SIG, I purchased a Colt 6940. Now SA-58 DSA or M1A would be premium 'battle rifles'.

Yep, it's one uhhhhhgly featureless, 30-round-preban using, fold-up-and-go-in-the-trunk, light as heck, reliable rifle.

Friend has a Keltec SU16CA and it fires great, can definitely hit the 400yard target at the local range, and its lots of fun to shoot, a different feel from the standard AR.

500 is pushing the limits of the 5.56 caliber but I'd say within reason so long as you aren't looking for a target rifle at 500.

you are going to have to look into something like .308 if you wan to knock down a man sizes target at 500 yards i would look into a M1A or an AR10 the 5.56/.223 will hit a target at 500 yards but you are asking a lot at those distances
That punk pulled a Glock 7 on me. You know what that is? It's a porcelain gun made in Germany. Dosen't show up on your airport X-ray machines, here, and it cost more than you make in a month.

Don't want an ar. I don't care what it looks like. The reason I'm shying from the Sig is because its not featureless. I have a remmy 700 5r in 308 to go to 1k. But want a semi. I would like a m1a, just outta my budget. Want a 223 cause the cheapness. Maybe I am asking to much for it to go 500. I'll look at saigas. Would really like a socom, but price, and cost of feeding it.
