Honestly, if it's your first AR, just get a nice DI upper and a ton of ammo instead of a GPU upper. Learn how it works, shoot the heck out of it and then if you get the itch to try something new, go for the GPU. Check out Riflegear.com or BravoCompanyUSA.com for some great deals on uppers.

The quality of the components is far more important than the operating system. If you get a cheap upper with substandard components you will have problems regardless of whether it is piston or DI. Spend a bit more money, and get a BCM, DD, or LMT DI upper. These uppers are set up properly with the correct components.

Most people who complain about the DI system have Bushmasters, Olympic arms or other lower quality uppers.

I was at a gun store in Vegas that rents FA firearms, and they have a Daniels Defense M4gery that ran 20K rounds in FA before the bolt gave up the ghost. Again you get what you pay for.

            See my comments here.

What bernieb90 said is also true. I had a LWRC M6A2 and it was great. I had a CMMG piston upper and it was crap. Carrier tilt like a SOB. Got rid of it as quick as I could.

Go DI and save money for ammo.

If I were in the market for a piston upper, I would seriously look at the Adcore BEAR upper. With that said, I have never felt the need for a piston upper but that doesn't mean I don't want one... hehe.
