    AK47/74 Trunnion Extension

So I've done a tone of reading on this. It seems like it was a hot idea in 2007-2008. CWS even sold one for awhile. But not much recent info on this Idea.

I know Grammaton has posted pics of his extension and others have mentioned theirs. Could we get a more comprehensive Thread going? Perhaps people might post pics of their builds and methods, so others could duplicate.
Ideally, One would be able to walk into a hardware store and put this together, at a minimum cost.

A little background: In an attempt to add a side-folding stock without adding excessive weight to the front of the rifle, the idea of adding a rear extension makes a lot of sense. Length is added to the rear of the weapon rather than the front ( With OAL AT MINIMUM 30"). The advantage is that we meet CA's OAL requirement is a way that A) keeps the weapon as short as possible, with the stock extended and B) negates the need for a muzzle extension (which otherwise would be 4"+ and perhaps more costly). Additionally, I like this route in that, when the stock is extended, it's as if no attempt to modify had been made, the side folding stock is longer than the extension, the extension is almost non existent at this point.

I prefer to add 4-5 inches at the rear, where there will be length added anyway when the stock opens, than to add length/weight, permanently, up front

Keep in mind that Folded AKs range from 26-29.7" folded. Said extension will have to vary from model to model, but on a Tantal for example, only a unobtrusive Inch or so is needed

Gentlemen and gentle women, what say you?

I haven't seen one of those rear trunnion extensions for years. I had a close look at one at the CWS stand at a gun show. My guess is they were a solution to a problem at that time, which has been superseded by newer solutions to the same problem, much like bullet buttons replacing top loading AKs with the side handled spring 10/30 magazines. I always thought those rear trunnion things were just plain odd looking, and would rather go with a fixed folder, than have one of those extensions sticking out the back of my rifle.

BTW, no where does it state that adding a muzzle extension to achieve your 30" OAL folded has to be permanent. It just has to be a min 30" at any one time. This is probably the neatest solution to achieve the 30" OAL, and it can be unscrewed after you lock the folding mechanism on your side folder: http://cncwarrior.com/comersus/store...?idProduct=170. There is also a 2" version as well, depending on your stock/ muzzle brake / FH set up (ie. Tantal).

Life can make you do many things, even kiss a man with a runny nose.

You are totally correct. the muzzle extension needs not be welded for legality.
