    Mini 14 tactical

I am interested in the new Ruger mini 14 tactical 16" barrel, standard rifle stock, unfortunately it has a flash suppressor. I have found an ffl who will remove the offending suppressor before transfer and then I can just install a muzzle break to make it legal. I also wonder if the distributor will ship 10 magazines or none at all to Ca.will I be treading on dangerous ground here.
Sorry all you AR fans I just don't like bullet buttons.
    Thanks Bill

Screw the mini! Get a Saiga. Built like a tank and super reliable and more accurate than a mini. Half the price too.

The only difference once you remove the flash hider and go with the standard stock is that it's all black... Why pay extra for a rifle that will have to have it's flash hider hacked off and magazines removed before you take possession of it?

But yeah, the Mini 14 in general is good to go if you don't want a mag lock.

        Misfire,

When I looked into this not too long ago, the dealer that I spoke to said the threads on the muzzle of the tactical minis are not standard thread, so normal AR type muzzle brakes won't fit. Ruger does not make a muzzle brake to fit, only the flash suppressor. The dealer said he wasn't aware of anyone who made a muzzle brake that would fit. For some silly reason, Ruger insists on using proprietary mags, proprietary scope mounts and an odd sized flash suppressor. In my opinion, they would sell a lot more minis if they standardized on all of those parts...

About 3 or 4 years ago, Ruger had a mini-14 called the NRA-ILA model that had a 16" barrel with no flash suppressor on it. It was a limited run and available in CA. I'd check around for it used and you will have what you want without paying extra for it.

Yep, the Mini-14 NRA model. But, good luck finding one used, although definitely worth a try. Maybe check Gunbroker. I bought two of them new and there is no way I'd let go of either one of them, but there may be hurtin' folks out there.

They have a 16" barrel with a nice heavy profile, military style sights, and a Hogue overmold stock. I love ours. My wife and I put hundreds and hundreds of rounds of 5.56 XM193 through them doing a weekend Appleseed with no issues. At a 400 yard stage (real, not simulated) we were able to put all rounds "in the black" (all over the torso, but still in the black.)

I also love the simplicity of these and have trained the wife and kids to field strip, clean, and reassemble them, where the ARs have only been mastered by my son and I so far.

Oh yeah... not to mention, with the lack of features it doesn't attract attention and you can also legally use non-legislatively-reduced-capacity magazines, and there is no need for a bullet button.

So yeah... very impressive little guns. So impressive that while I own a number of "black rifles", including a pre-ban Colt SP-1 (in a different lower of course,) that I feature the NRA Mini-14 in my sig and have since 2008

Get the Tact model and have the dealer remove the hider before sending... shouldn't be an issue. At least now, you have threads to put a muzzle brake on if u want to. SE has a nice break for it... actually, Midway has several brakes listed for Ruger's thread size. If nothing else, put a thread protector on it and save the hider until you get out of CA

Also, 10 rounds are ok to ship.

All the aftermarket muzzle brakes I've seen are the pinned-on version, not threaded. If you find one that's threaded, please let us know. I'd buy a tactical mini tomorrow if I could find one. If not, I'm going to go with a stainless 580 series...

                  Ruger thread size: 9/16" x 24 RH

Smith Enterprise muzzle brake that I installed on a friend's Tact model: http://www.smithenterprise.com/products07.html

Here's a link to several at Brownells.

You'll find high-quality gun parts, gunsmithing tools, firearms, ammunition, reloading equipment, optics, and more!

The issue is there is no shelve on the barrel where the threading ends. So you have to either jam-nut the brake or drill & set-screw.

The Mini 14/20 ranch seems like it could be CA legal with a 10 rnd mag or am I missing something. Sorry to go off-topic slightly...I understand the issue with the flash sup on the tactical, but Ruger's site says the Ranch 14/20 doesn't have CA approval so it got me thinking.

Ruger has made a stainless 16" with no suppressor for the last couple of years. It is not listed on their website or catalog. It is a LE version designed short to fit in vehicles. If you know a good Ruger dealer have them order it for you. They will have to ask specifically for it, and unless you can have 20 round mags, they will have to be willing to swap them out for 5 or 10 rounders.

something better to think about is how threaded barrels are illegal in california. having a muzzle break installed permanently before you purchase it would be a safer route. if im wrong here feel free to correct me.

Threaded barrels are only illegal on pistols in CA. Rifles are perfectly fine.
