zero range sanity check

Trying to set up some gear for playing at very long ranges. So far the AR-15 has a 30moa base which with the ring package I'm using sets the scope centerline 2.865 inches above the centerline of the bore (measured at the objective bell).

Given a typical 62gr load (using as a benchmark, later loads will be 75gr and up once I'm back in practice) 5.56x45 loading from an 18" bbl, I'm figuring my MINIMUM far zero range to be somewhere near 370 yards.

Did I totally bonehead the math on that or am I close. I realize exact isn't going to happen but I need to make sure my own math is right.

Anyone else out there have a 20 or 30 MOA mount on their AR?

If you're "setting up gear" for long range with an AR, you'll need a different barrel. An 18" is too short.

For 1,000 yards, I click up 35moa of elevation from a 100yd zero. That's on a 10moa base with the scope 2.373" above bore centerline. Throwing 80VLDs at 2,700fps.

you answered my question for the most part already.

18" barrel is what I have and what I'm going to use. It's screwing around, not killing terrorists. I don't hit the double-bull with every dart I throw but you don't see me puss out and use a compound bow instead or go stand 2 feet from the board because of it. All those guys that ONLY train to engage targets well within their guns normal range aren't really testing themselves. You gotta stretch to find where you break. I know how far my long barrel guns are good for... I want to find out how far these are good for, with me behind the wheel.

I think I understand what you mean by "MINIMUM far zero range". Without checking my DOPE, I'm putting in about 15MOA from my 100yd zero at 600yd. My memory is a little sketchy at 900yds (been a while since I've been down to Pala) but I think it was about 40MOA.

Load is usually a 60gr VMax at about 3100.
