    AR-15 Questions

Newbie here with a question. I decided to build an AR-15 and I had a question about the barrel length. I deduced from the legality flow chart that the barrel must be at least 16" long and the gun must be 30". That having said I could not find much information about having a longer barrel. I wanted to make sure before plunking down a large sum of change for a complete upper. Ideally I would like the length to be 18" or 20" -- would that be legal? This would be part of a standard Cali-Nerfed AR.

If it is legal, does anybody have suggestions for affordable complete uppers around that length with a heavy barrel?

    Thanks in advance~

I don't think there's a maximum length for AR barrels...

Its perfectly legal to use longer barrels. There are lots of 20" and 24" heavy barrel varmint uppers. Rock river arms makes one and I think stag makes one now also.

        Affordable Complete Uppers:
I'd say go with DPMS or maybe Del Ton.

It's currently out of stock but they have other dpms 20" complete uppers that are pretty decently priced.

Both brands are relatively reputable (They're no colt/lmt etc but they'll do the job) and more affordable given those prices are complete with bcg and charging handle

Barrel length totally depends on what you want to do with the AR... if you want up close go 16 in.

If you want distance, figure out what distance means to you and go accordingly. you can use a 16in barrel at 300yds all day long.... if you want to get super precise at distance go 20-24 in, but that pretty much limits you to a certain field.

              Good luck though

Thx for the quick replies. Ill def check out the things you guys mentioned.

I kinda want to be able to do some long range action.

I dont want to build my own upper because I heard it was much more difficult and requires tools.

Edit: I suppose 300 yrds is plenty far for me. I think i will go with a 16" for now and how much of a hassle is it to change barrels or would it be wiser to go with a new upper in the future.

If you want long range put your money into an AR-10 in 7.62x51/.308. I have shot mine on a 2500 meter range and I know it will reach out a bit further with the right ammo & conditions.
