The photos were of a redneck pop-rivet build, a guy on another forum bought for $50, demilled, and then rebuilt properly. These were the "before" photos. The clue that it was a joke post, was in the use of the word "purty". Guess I was being too subtle.

IMO it actually takes some tools knowledge and SKILL to build a AK. I can show a 12 year old how to build a AR and they can sit there in a assembly line and make them all day long.
Nice thing about building your own YOU choose what parts you put on and if they or the way it was assembled together is not satisfactory you can start over or make it 100% perfect where if you buy it from a vendor you could be getting a perfect rifle or one that needs to go back because it shouldn't of left the shop in the condition you received it. I don't see much nostalgia in a AK unless you either carried one or got shot at by one in a conflict of some sort. I know when I handed my uncle my M14 he looked at it for a long long time rubbed the stock and handed it back to me with a strange smile. I know he carried one when he was in Vietnam. he has no problem with guns but he doesn't own any.Comment

Okay... let's compare apples to apples.
Unless you're talking about pushing the button on a CNC, a 12 year old isn't going to be able to assembly line 80% lowers all day long
Similar for an AK built on a Nodak Spud. Ya, it takes a little more skill and work than assembling an AR from a stripped lower, but the majority of common mistakes on the AK are in the bending, trimming, spot welding, and heat treating (or lack of). If the parts kit is matching numbers, it's not that big of a deal to rivet the trunnions onto the receiver.- Rich

Excellent receivers and best ones out there IMO. It will save you time if you buy a nds, if you put it together yourself it would save you a lot of money vs sending it out to be built.
Kinda wish I hadn't sold my nds-kp receiver now that tula akm kits are easy to get. That would be a pretty cool build.
I'm thinking about building a late 80's east german and will go with a nds1.2024 New Year?s resolution will be no posting..
