If it's a registered assault weapon, you can put a bullet button and a 10 round magazine and make it legal. You would need to have your father send in a no longer in possession form and have the firearm removed from the registry. Then he could sell or give it to you, but you would never be able to use high-capacity magazines in it again.

If it's not a registered assault weapon. Disassemble it into parts or put a bullet button on it as fast as you can.

If it's off list, which the Sa2000 is, it can either be turned into a featureless rifle which will enable you to use any high cap mags YOU owned pre-2000 or you can add a mag lock to it before sending it to a local FFL for transfer. This is all under the assumption your dad is out of CA.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that in California, "once and AW, always an AW". And that AWs could not be legally transferred by private individuals in State.

Only if it is an AW by name, not features, You can change the features on an OLL and make it a non AW. You do have to notify BOF.
