    1" mild steel

I may have some 1" mild steel at my disposal and I've been thinking about making a target with it.

What's the consensus on shooting it safely? It would be out just past 200 yds and would be subjected to high power rifles, FMJ, and probably some steel core.

I'm placing my bet on punching a hole right through it.
While we're here arguing about the latest high tech running shoes, there's some Kenyan out there running barefoot. Guess who's gonna win the marathon?

I think the most it will see is 30-06, possibly steel core.

Angle it down just to be safe, my buddy got hit in the chest by a ricocet off a steel target that was close to 100 yards away. I know your gonna double that but still, angle it down and make sure everybody has glasses, shooters or not.

If you have access to an arc welder, pad it with some hard facing rod.

Last time out, a buddy of mine brought some 3/4-1" mild steel plate that he had padded with hard facing rod and it held up to pretty much everything we threw at it. I hit it with some 5.56 green tip and it only knocked off some of the padding. He hit it consistently with .308 and it had about the same effect. This was at about 100 yards.

just googled hard facing rod. Interesting. i dont really have access to a stick welder and it would take me forever to do the plate with the tig, but i wont rule that out.

most tig welders can run as a stick welder. look into your machine more there is a chance it could.

but holy crap 1" plate is going to suck to carry out. i hope there is veh access.

the Tig at work is too near really valuable stuff to use it for stick.

i have my own tig/stick machine, but it's at a friends house and i have to hard wire it to a 50amp circuit breaker, which is kinda a pain in my ***. i wont rule it out as a possibility, though.

I've picked it up. it will suck to carry out, but i think i can make it a couple hundred yards. it will be detachable from the rest of the stand and someone else can carry that!
