Your opinions of 300 win mag for long range shooting?

Planning to purchase another bolt action rifle in a few months. I'm considering a Savage in 300 Win Mag, but I don't know a whole lot about the round and would like your opinions.

    I want:
-the rifle and round to be capable of hitting targets with 1 MOA accuracy from 600-1000 yards (the rifle and round should be capable, even if I'm not yet...want to work up to it).
-enough stopping power to be able to take any kind of game animal deer-size and up in North America, preferably without it running off after I shoot it.
-Lots of recoil. I want it to kick like a mule.
-a cartridge that I'll be able to find reloading supplies for. I plan to load my own match grade ammo.

This rifle is to be an exercise in recoil management, long range shooting, match-grade reloading, and a all-around hunting gun (never hunted before but will start this year). Emphasis is on building my long range skills, but I'd like the round to have enough oomph to be able to actually take game at that distance if I'm going to learn to shoot that far... not that I plan on trying to hunt at 1000 yards....

Is the 300 Win Mag a terrible choice? Why or why not?

300 Win will be fine for what you've stated above. The heavy barrel Savage with the accustock will still definately kick.

Looks to shoot pretty flat and maintain its energy well over distance compared to other 30s.

Still, I want the opinions of my fellow Calgunners. You folks are a great resource.

        Simple answer.

It's like any other .30 caliber bore cartridge, only more so.

You'll need to handload to get the most out of it, and unless you're building a 20lb bench rifle, it won't be a shoot it all day proposition, but the .300 Winmag is a great long range cartridge and will perform the jobs you describe.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

.300 Savage is lacking in that it has a pretty short neck compared to .308win and .300winmag. The redesign/introduction of the .308Win corrected that.

This short neck causes one to seat the bullet a bit deep in the case (well below the shoulder/case junction) This prevents an optimum load to get the velocities many desire for long range shooting.

But that said, it's a good cartridge to handload for with a wide variety of projectile options. And, yes, it will bang you.

The 300win mag is a good choice for all you want. I have never shot mine at game over 450yds. But others have.

It's definitely more economical for shooting beyond 1000m than the .338 Lapua Magnum. It pretty much costs similar to .308WIN whereas the latter is significantly more expensive and it can still reach out to about 1300m.

                  Oldschool, outdated, overrated.

300 Win Mag is not a bad choice. You'll be able to find it on the shelves of many stores that sell hunting ammo, it's not uncommon. It's also a nice, hard hitting long range caliber. Reloading, it's very versatile and inexpensive.

Not exactly what I'm looking for right now (probably overkill for a hunting rifle), but that has definitely been added to the list of must-haves.

I figure once I master shooting out to 1000 yards it'll be time to get a rifle (or upper) that'll reach out even farther....

although i have no hands on experience in long range shooting, i have been researching this topic as im also trying to get me a remy 700. what i have gathered from numerous long range forums is the remington 260 has extremely similar balistic values as the 300winmag. Its not uncommon to hear people say 1300 yards with hand loads is possible with a 260. I plan to get a sps 308 and shoot the **** out of it then as i progress i will rebarrel it to a remington 260 tackle on the 1k plus targets
