    Just Purchased S&W M&P-15!

Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum and to California for that matter! Just want to say I just went through my first EVER gun purchasing experience and went with the Smith and Wesson M&P-15 (with bullet button of course!). I am on my 8th day of the 10 day wait and to make things worse I just found out that my FFL will be out of town all next week because he will be at the International Gun Show in Las Vegas! This really sucks!!! I guess the only thing worse than waiting the 10 days on your first gun purchase is being told you have to wait 6 more additional days on top of that!!!

Anybody own this S&W? How do you like it?

Welcome to Calguns! Congratulations on your purchase.

Print out the flowchart and be familiar with the Law, it's very convoluted in this State, the the point that many in Law Enforcement don't know what's what.

I built my AR of of a S&W lower, but I have no experience with the rifle you bought. From what I have heard they are a good quality firearm. You stated that this is your first purchase but I'm assuming by your screen name you have some experience with the AR platform, correct?

The wait always sux, you'll just have to deal with that unfortunately.

Yea you guessed right, I am an active duty Marine stationed in California. It's kind of funny because I've been in the Marines for close to 15 but haven't bought a gun until just recently! I guess the main reason why I haven't bought one until now is because I was stationed in Japan for sooo long. Now that I'm back, let the fun begin!!!

I can already see how this will get VERY addictive! I want to purchase a 9mm M9A1 Beretta next just so I can shoot from time to time. Anyone have one of those? How do you like it? The M9 use to be my "duty" weapon until they changed us to use the Colt M4 Carbine. Which brings me to another question, can I use my 30 round magazines I was issued at a local shooting range or is that a no no? Are there people who actually check your magizine capacity at ranges? Just curious.

You picked a good rifle. Solid manufacture, solid warranty, known good rifle performance. You will not regret your pick. Good job.

Nope no 30 rounders, even with a bullet button. Only 10 in California.

If you change the rifle to featureless you can legally use 30 round mags.

NO HE CAN NOT unless the owner of the magazine is next to him.

He would first need to have purchased the magazines before 1/1/2000 while in CA.

the way you worded that was improper.

Please read exactly what I said. I said is he converts it to featureless he can use 30 round mags. That is a fact, if you have a featureless rifle you CAN use 30 round mags. I said nothing about the legalities of how he aquired any mags. The way i worded it is perfect. And just so you know there are more ways to legally own full capacity mags, other than having purchased them before the law.

the way he worded it is just fine.

You can acquire hi-cap mags other than having them before the cutoff in CA.

                            yeah..ok

You can also buy an 11.5" upper online for a AR15, it fits right on a S&W M&P15 no problem.

see what I am saying now? You can't just toss out some poop like that without explaining the legalities.

Ok here are the legaities, possession/use of a full capacity mag is not a crime no matter how you acquired it.
                              Prohibited actions:
manufacture or cause to be manufactured
                              import into the state
                              keep for sale
                              offer or expose for sale
                              give
                              lend
Note that it is not prohibited to
                              own a large-capacity magazine
                              possess a large-capacity magazine
use a large-capacity magazine, in whatever gun*
repair a legally possessed large-capacity magazine
(and, necessarily, to acquire the parts to make the repair --
remember it only makes sense to buy parts kits for existing
                              legally-possessed large-capacity magazines)
