Ok sorry if this question has been asked. I tried searching and couldnt find anything so dont get mad. I just bought a OLL w a bullet button for a build, my dad has a colt AR preban before '87 with hi cap mags that he no longer shoots. So can we trade lowers so ill have the cool preban gun and my bullet button lower can be collecting dust instead? thanks in advance!!

This is assuming the AW is registered as an AW. If not, somebody's in a heap of trouble and should contact a lawyer ASAP.
@ OP: If the Colt is a registered AW, the answer to your question is no. The lower is registered to your father forever and nobody else can own it unless he sells it out of state. Unless that Colt was registered by your dad in both your names in the first round of AW registrations, it can't be done legally.
If the rifle is registered in your dad's name only, the two of you can go shooting, you can fire the rifle while you're at the range, but the two of you can't swap lowers. You could put your upper on his lower in his presence, but you two can't swap rifles.
If the rifle wasn't registered, contact a competent attorney.The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

When your dad becomes too old to shoot, you disassemble the RAW lower and move the stripped lower out of CA. He then sends a letter to CA DOJ stating such.
If you wait til he passes, they have grounds to force its destruction or surrender. I maybe wrong, talk to a probate lawyer if his family has the same rights and restrictions as he does. The DOJ COULD take the position, only he can legally remove the RAW from the state, and if you take possession after his death, even to remove it from the state, you are in violation of the law....
Once again talk to a lawyer. Keep in mind there is a school of thought stating only a Colt semi-automatic rifle can be an AW, a stripped lower doesnt meet that requirment in the law. HOLD on I am wrong on that...once a RAW always a RAW unless removed from the list, and the only way to do that is by moving the feature that placed it inside AW law...a Colt can only be removed from the state or destroyed. There is no way to remove "Colt" from the RAW.
