I just picked up a thumbhole sporter stock for my Tikka T3 lite. Yes, I know, it's not lite anymore. But I've never been happy with the grip on the T3 production stock, and I was very interested in trying a thumbhole style stock. My initial impressions:
Very nice workmanship. Well cut, nicely finished and a very precise fit for the T3 hardware. Swapping the stocks was very easy, and the stock fits the action/barrel like a glove. The gun feels very solid with the new stock. The stock does weigh ~20 ounces more than the composite production stock, but it also feels like it has better balance. With the gun mounted, the cheek rest is a noticeable improvement in the ergonomics of the production stock, and the thumbhole grip is much nicer and more comfortable for my hands. I'll try to post some pics and a further report after I get a chance to take it to the range later this week.Comment

O.k., here's a pic of the Helmick Arms stock:
Took it to the range today. It's more comfortable to hold the gun in all positions, and it's more stable, too. The extra weight is very obvious when standing and shooting offhand, but it also easier to hold the gun securely in a relaxed grip.
This would be a killer stock if it was a pound lighter. I think it would be possible to remove several ounces by hollowing out the forearm, butt and pistol grip without losing any structural integrity.
Overall, I'm very impressed. I'm not sure I would take it hunting if I was going on a overnight backpacking trip, but I'm definitely going to try it on my next day trip. Since it's so easy to change stocks, I can keep the production stock and use it when saving weight is important.Last edited by acourvil; 01-26-2011, 8:29 PM.Comment
